Bob Geldof "banned" Paul McCartney from performing on the new Band Aid track.
Stars including One Direction, Ed Sheeran and U2's Bono were handpicked by Bob to sing on the latest version of 'Do They Know It's Christmas?' with The Beatles frontman not making the cut.
When asked why Paul was not invited to take part, Bob explained: "Because Macca's always done stuff. He was in the band in 2004 - him, Radiohead and Damon."
He joked: "But look, on this we've got from the newest to the hippest to the oldest... and he hasn't made the cut, what can I tell you?"
The track - which recently became the biggest-selling downloaded single of 2014 - is raising money to help fight the Ebola crisis in West Africa.
The 63-year-old philanthropist and former Boomtown Rats singer has revealed that he wanted to give the younger stars a chance.
He said: "The thing is, there's only so many lines, so what do you do? At one point Midge Ure was like, 'We can't take more', so you try and make it the girls and the boys, that's the first thing.
"Then it's who's happening in America - that's really important as sales are quantifiably more over there. Ellie Goulding, Ed Sheeran, One Direction, Coldplay, Sam Smith, U2... all these people are caning it in America."
Meanwhile, Bob has hit back at critics who branded the track "smug" and "hypocritical".
He revealed that many stars gave both their time and money to help fundraise, adding to the Daily Mirror newspaper: "Should we take a pop at everybody who is immensely talented and has money?"

Jon Hamm wants a jetpack.
The 'Mad Men' actor would love to create a device that would enable him to fly anywhere and would like to use it to fly to the UK for the festive season.
Asked what he would produce if he could create any technology, he said: "It would be nice to be able to fly anywhere with a jetpack.
"We were promised them in the 60s but it never really came to fruition - but I'm holding out.
"[Where would I fly to?] I gather it's very pretty in London around Christmas."
The 43-year-old actor - who is in a relationship with Jennifer Westfeldt -refuses to use social media as he wants to engage directly with his loved ones, but admits he is obsessed with the internet and playing 'Candy Crush Saga'.
He told Stylist magazine: "I thought, 'I'm not paying enough attention to friends and family' so adding another layer felt counter-productive.
"That said, 'I'm probably on the internet too much and I've been working my way through the ridiculous time-waster that is 'Candy Crush'. I think I'm on level 280, which is just absurd."

Azealia Banks is "hanging up her fighting gloves".
The 23-year-old rapper has been embroiled in a number of public feuds in the past, exchanging barbs with the likes of Eminem, T.I. and Iggy Azalea, but insists she is now a "lady" and stops herself when she feels on the verge of an outburst.
She said: "Am I hanging up my fighting gloves? Yeah. I'm a lady. I don't wanna be dealing with that.
"Now, when you feel the adrenalin going, you stop yourself. You've seen me curse people out. Let's do something else now.
"When I feel it, I realise and I go and have a glass of water or something to calm down."
Azealia - who signed her record deal in 2011 when she was 19 - thinks her social media outbursts are understandable given her privileged position in modern society.
She told NME magazine: "If you give a 19 year old a million pounds and a bottle of vodka and a Chanel handbag and [an iPhone] then what do you think is going to happen?
"I always tell my mom, 'Just imagine if you were coke binging in the 80s and you had Twitter.' Imagine if they had Twitter during the crack epidemic."

Zayn Malik is "sick" of life in the spotlight.
The One Direction singer has worried fans after missing some public appearances and appearing tired and gaunt, and both his bandmates and fiancee Perrie Edwards reportedly share the concerns of his loyal supporters.
A source said: "Zayn is stressed out and sick of his life being in the spotlight. He isn't sleeping well and seems exhausted...
"They are about to go on another world tour and Perrie is worried about how he will cope. She has asked the other boys to keep an eye on him. They are concerned for him too and regularly let him know they are there to talk should he need them."
The 'Steal My Girl' singer is said to be finding the group's constant touring schedule particularly tough because it means being away from his loved ones for long periods of time.
The source added to Britain's Grazia magazine: "Zayn has always been uncomfortable with the whole fame thing, whereas the others seem to take it in their stride.
"He's started to feel really jaded by the endless travel and attention...
"What he finds especially hard is being away from Perrie. He is a family person and wants to spend time with her. But it is really hard when you're in the biggest band in the world."

Aaron Carter insists he's not obsessed with Hilary Duff.
The 26-year-old star, who dated the 'Chasing the Sun' hitmaker, 27, when she was 13, hit back at critics for suggesting he is still pining after her because he posted a photograph of himself watching an old episode of her Disney series, 'Lizzie McGuire,' in which he kissed her, on Instagram this week.
He wrote on Twitter: "It's not my fault that @DisneyChannel was playing my episode of 'Lizzie McGuire' while I had some time to watch TV the other night.
"All of these jokes aren't funny anymore. Let it go because it's starting to creep ME out now."
The former couple dated for two years until 2003 and Hilary, who has a two-year-old son, Luca, with estranged husband Mike Comrie, recently admitted she felt "uncomfortable" when Aaron declared his love for her in March.
Speaking about him in October, she said: "It's...ugh! I don't know. I don't know what to say about it!
"It [our relationship] was so many years ago. I literally haven't seen him ... so, it's uncomfortable."
The 'Crush On You' hitmaker called Hilary the love of his life shortly after she announced her separation from Mike in January.
He tweeted at the time: "I'll spend the rest of my life trying to better myself to get back to her. I don't care what ANY of you think.
"Don't be that stupid douche that loses the love of your life forever... Like me..."

Diddy was disappointed after being outbid on a $1.2 million Pablo Picasso painting.
The 45-year-old mogul, who has an estimated fortune of $700 million, reportedly made "a beeline" for a 1918 fresco titled 'Venus,' which features a woman standing in a half shell and with a cupid to her left, at the annual Art Basel fair in Miami at a VIP preview on Wednesday (03.12.14).
A source said the rapper wasn't happy when he went back for a second look alongside friends Tommy Hilfiger and Swizz Beatz and discovered the painting had been sold at the Baz Luhrmann-designed booth of Zurich-based Galerie Gmurzynska.
High-flying hotelier Vikram Chatwal confirmed to the New York Post's Page Six that he secured the coveted artwork for an undisclosed sum.
A source said the rapper attempted to cheer himself up by spending $95,000 on a Tracey Emin neon at Lehmann Maupin.
Diddy - real name Sean Combs - is a huge fan of the annual event and he reportedly splashed out on several pieces by Tracey Emin and the collective Randon International at the fair in 2011, as well as artworks by Ivan Navarro and Brett Murray in 2012, according to Artnet.com.

The 28-year-old actor reportedly looked "besotted" with the 'Two Weeks' singer as she sang a number of tracks from her album, 'LP1,' at the annual art fair on Thursday (04.12.14).
A source said: "Before the show, Rob and a group of pals hung out with FKA in her dressing room. When she went on, he and the friends watched from backstage.
"I don't know that you really dance to her music, but Robert was swaying. It was adorable. He looked besotted with her and very proud."
The eyewitness told E! News that as soon as the British beauty finished her set: "Robert gave her a huge hug and a kiss!"
The 26-year-old singer - real name Tahliah Debrett Barnett - recently admitted that she finds it "challenging" being the 'Twilight Saga' star's girlfriend but says it is worth it because she "loves" him.
Discussing her popularity with paparazzi, she said: "I look uncomfortable because I am uncomfortable. But then it's like, is this person in my life worth that? And he is, without question ... In comparison to how happy I am. And how I feel with him. It's 100 percent worth it.
"That side of my life [the paparazzi] is nothing to do with me. That's, like, that is the ... side of life of the man that I love."

Reese Witherspoon says she constantly embarrasses her children.
The 'Wild' star, who has daughter Ava, 15, and son Deacon, 11, with ex-husband Ryan Phillippe, admits her two-year-old son, Tennessee, with husband Jim Toth is the only one who doesn't complain about anything she does.
Speaking about her youngest child, the 38-year-old actress, who also recently confessed Ava was mortified by her sex scenes in her latest film, said: "He's the only one who's not embarrassed of me. He's the only one that will let me take his picture too, the rest are like, 'Mom stop.' "

"Now my 11 year old, the other day, he's gotten so embarrassed of me that we were driving in my car and I had my coffee cup there and he said 'Ugh, the lipstick on your coffee cup is so embarrassing.' Wow, well get over it kid cause I have a lot of lipstick."
The blonde beauty is in a great place in her life and admits she feels "very blessed" to be married to Hollywood agent Jim.
She told 'The Ellen DeGeneres Show': "It means everything to me that he's always just telling me how great I am and how much he loves what I do. I feel very blessed."

Jessica Chastain admits her sister's suicide completely changed her.
The 'Zero Dark Thirty' actress was devastated when her younger sibling, Juliet, took her own life in 2003 after a long battle with depression, but believes the experience has helped her to stay grounded despite her Hollywood success.
The 37-year-old star said: "It completely changed the person I am. A movie, Oscars, a dress, if someone thinks I'm stupid...I realised nothing is that important."
Jessica attended the prestigious Juilliard School in New York City after winning an acting scholarship provided by the late Robin Williams, who committed suicide last August, and hopes to carry on his "legacy."
She told the January issue of InStyle magazine: "I always thought in some way I would have a chance to pay him back. It was a very strange thing to have never met him. I didn't want to be stalkerish, but then you always question yourself: Did I do enough? I'm hoping there's a way to continue his legacy and keep the scholarship going."
The 'Interstellar' star has no interest in carving out a career in other areas.
She said: "My favourite thing is the world is acting, and I want to be seen as a professional. I don't have a lifestyle website. I'm not interested in the fame of being a personality. Some people are, and they love it, and that's great for them."
