Shane Black says Hollywood doesn’t embrace risk-takers

Shane Black thinks there’s a "dearth of risk-taking" in Hollywood.
The 56-year-old filmmaker – who has directed hits such as ‘Iron Man 3’ and ‘The Nice Guys’ – has bemoaned the current landscape in the American movie business, suggesting that studios are unwilling to take a risk on original ideas.
He said: "Nowadays, given the cost and the necessity of meeting a certain quota in terms of recouping your investment, the playground factor for directors has diminished, that’s for certain.
"It’s collaboration at best and scrutiny at worst given to the films that are not allowed to fail. There’s a dearth of risk-taking in a lot of films. Ultimately, it’s up to me to argue whether a risk is worth taking. But it’s certainly going to be easier if it’s not got a high budget."
Shane’s latest movie is the fourth installment in the ‘Predator’ film series.
But the director has revealed he plans to take a step back from big-budget movies following its release.
Asked about his future plans, he told the Independent newspaper: "The next one will not be "Predator’.
"I’m going to take a bit of a break, take stock and try and get creative about something. I’ve been working on the same project for two years and it’s time to do something really quirky and risky and odd. So, I’m going to get a little odd and see what comes of it."
