Sam Mendes felt Craig was saying Bond goodbye

Sam Mendes thought Daniel Craig was "saying goodbye" to James Bond in the final scenes of ‘Spectre’.
The film’s director has hinted that the 48-year-old actor – who is rumoured to be quitting the role after portraying the suave spy in the last four films – could be hanging up his tuxedo in the near future because his latest portrayal of the legendary character felt like a farewell to the franchise.
He said: "It did feel to me like Daniel was saying goodbye to Bond at the end.
"But there’s clearly a way he can easily come back. Bond isn’t dead! So that’s clearly Daniel’s call."
While Sam – who helmed the last two Bond movies, ‘Skyfall’ and ‘Spectre’ – is keen for Daniel to return as the Secret Service agent for a fifth time, he admits the actor will have to be in the right frame of mind to portray the character.
He added to Empire magazine: "I think you’ve got to feel 100 per cent to come back, and I think he knows that.
"He needs to have a break and do another role and see how he feels after that. I’ll be watching with as much interest as you guys."
Several stars have been linked to the role should Daniel quit, including ‘Poldark’ star Aidan Turner who was recently rumoured to have held talks with producers about taking over from the ‘Layer Cake’ star.
A source recently said: "Aidan has held preliminary talks with Bond producers and being in LA will give him a further chance to discuss the role."
Other stars including Tom Hiddleston, Idris Elba and Tom Hardy have also been linked to the part.
