Sally Wainwright: Coronation Street has too many episodes

Sally Wainwright thinks ‘Coronation Street’ has too many episodes.

The ‘Happy Valley’ writer believes the long-running ITV soap is at risk of "ravaging" some of its longest-standing characters such as Ken Barlow (William Roache) and Roy Cropper (David Neilson) because of the growing number of weekly episodes.

She said: "When you are going out that many times you do end up having to have people buried under the patio and people driving cars into canals rather than finding the drama in the trials of day-to-day life."

The award-winning writer also admitted she hasn’t been tuning into the soap since she left her role on the production team because she is unable to access "inside information" now.

She told The Sun newspaper: "I haven’t watched ‘Corrie’ since I left because I couldn’t stand not knowing what happened, I wanted inside information that I no longer had."

Meanwhile, Sally recently revealed she was "feeling the pressure" about writing the second series of ‘Happy Valley’, despite having already penned half of the series.

She shared: "It’s the first time I’ve felt pressure actually writing the second series of ‘Happy Valley’, because the first series was massively successful in a way I haven’t experienced before.

"I’ve written three of the six episodes so far. I think it’s really good. The test will be writing the last three episodes, and it’s about maintaining that quality throughout the whole series. You need a clear focus so the audience feel that they’re in good hands. It’s scary but great."
