Sally Dynevor dressed up as Mary The Punk for her first day on Coronation Street

Sally Dynevor dressed like Mary ‘The Punk’ Smith for her first day on ‘Coronation Street’.

The 57-year-old actress – who first played Sally Metcalfe back in 1986 – initially signed on for a small role, and she thought she’d messed up her chance after channelling Linda Davidson’s wild ‘EastEnders’ alter ego.

Appearing on last night’s (26.08.20) episode of ‘Coronation Street Icons’, the soap star revealed she dressed in spiky punk rock clothing after being inspired by the character.

She said: "It was Mary the Punk in ‘EastEnders’. I thought, ‘Yeah, I really wanna look like that’.

"I got on the set and [Kevin Webster actor] Mike Le Vell went ‘oh my god’… He said, ‘She won’t last long if she’s a punk!’

"So I went back to the make-up chair and washed it all off."

Although Sally was glad she listened to her co-star, she admitted it would have been "quite interesting" if her character had been a punk over the years.

Meanwhile, she recently revealed she would love to stay on ‘Corrie’ for decades to come and emulate the longevity of cobbles legends like Bill Roache (Ken Barlow), Barbara Knox (Rita Tanner) and Sue Nicholls (Audrey Roberts).

She said: "When I look at Bill, Barbara and Sue Nicholls, they’re incredible. Nobody knows their lines better than them.

"I hope I’m still in the show in my 70s and 80s – if they’ll have me! I’m very sociable, I love coming in to work and I want to keep going as long as I can."

When it comes to her on-screen character, Sally would love her namesake to become "more of a busybody when she’s older" while offering support to other ‘Corrie’ residents.

She added: "I’d like her to be there for people, so she’s someone that people felt they could talk to – she’s also quite caring."
