Russell T. Davies is jealous he didn’t think of casting Peter Capaldi as Doctor Who.
The former showrunner admits he can’t understand why he didn’t think of asking the 56-year-old actor to take on the role of the titular Time Lord during his time in charge of the BBC One sci-fi drama.
Speaking about current showrunner Steven Moffat’s casting of Capaldi, he said: "I know Peter Capaldi. He did a ‘Doctor Who’ with us and he did a brilliant ‘Torchwood’ and when they cast him I was just envious. I just thought: so brilliant. Why I didn’t I think of that? Brilliant."
The 51-year-old screenwriter insists that although he still watches the programme "absolutely religiously" and thinks Capaldi is "glorious" in the role of the Doctor, he is now focusing on his own future projects.
Quizzed on whether he’d ever write another episode, he told Radio Times magazine: "Wouldn’t that be nice? The lovely Steven invites me every year to come and write one. And I love him and I love them and I love watching it, but here I am, moving on. I love ‘Doctor Who’ with all my heart but nothing is more important to me than my own stuff."
