Royal baby lucky pennies announced

Babies born on the same day as Britain’s Prince William’s second child will receive a ‘lucky’ silver penny.

The 32-year-old prince and wife Duchess Catherine – who are already parents to 21-month-old Prince George – are expected to welcome their baby into the world around April 25 and 26 and newborns whose arrivals are registered on The Royal Mint’s Facebook page will be eligible to receive one of 2,015 commemorative coins.

The silver coins will be presented in a white box tied with purple ribbon and bearing the image of a silver carousel horse, while the pennies themselves will be minted with the 1p’s Royal Shield design and the recently-revealed new portrait of Queen Elizabeth.

Shane Bissett, Director of Commemorative Coin at the Royal Mint said: "The birth of the new royal baby will be a joyous occasion not just for Their Royal Highnesses The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge but also for the whole nation, as we prepare to celebrate another remarkable milestone in their life journey together.

"However, it will also be a special day for many mothers and fathers across the country as they too welcome the arrival of their new babies, hence why we wanted to extend this historical moment to them with a unique and timeless gift that can be treasured for years to come."

The Royal Mint will also produce a £5 coin in celebration of the birth.

The queen – the baby’s great-grandmother – approved the coin proposal at a meeting of the Privy Council at Buckingham Palace on March 19.

They follow from coins which were issued to mark George’s birth almost two years ago.

Then, babies born on July 22, 2013, were eligible to receive lucky silver pennies, while 10,000 solid silver crown-sized £5 coins, which cost £80 each, and 2,013 22-carat gold sovereigns, which cost £800 each, sold out within days of going on sale.

The births of babies born on the same day as the new royal can be registered on Facebook.com/theroyalmint.
