Rock star whose band supported Oasis dead at 40

Justin Baren, whose band The Redwalls opened for Oasis, has passed away at age 40.

The rock musician was a founding member of the Chicago group and sadly died on November 28. A cause of death is not known at this time.

In a moving tribute, the band wrote on social media: “It is with heavy hearts that we share the passing of our friend, brother, and bandmate, Justin Baren. Justin was an essential part of The Redwalls. His energy, intuition, and raw musicality helped shape who we were. Not just as a band, but as a group of kids trying to make something meaningful together.

“The cause of Justin’s passing has not been officially determined. He will be deeply missed, and his memory will be a blessing. We’re grateful for the years, the music, and all the memories we shared.”

The band’s career highlights included supporting Oasis during shows in both the UK and the US back in 2005, notably at Manchester’s City of Manchester Stadium (now the Etihad).

A funeral service for Baren will be held at Zion Gardens Cemetery in Chicago, Illinois, on December 9 at 12pm.

Born and raised in Deerfield, Illinois, Baren developed a passion for music early on, drawing inspiration from classic acts such as The Beatles, The Kinks, and The Rolling Stones. While still at Deerfield High School, he and his brother Logan formed their first band, The Pages, in 2001 alongside friends Andrew Langer (guitar) and Jordan Kozer (drums).

By 2003, the group had rebranded as The Redwalls and quickly built a reputation on the Chicago live circuit. Their debut album Universal Blues introduced their retro‑tinged sound, and soon after, they signed with Capitol Records – the same label that once represented The Beatles.

The band’s major‑label breakthrough came in 2005 with the release of De Nova. 

Justin’s obituary reads: “Justin was a founding member of The Redwalls, a Chicago-based rock band known for its retro sound and soaring harmonies. As a singer, songwriter, and bass guitarist, he brought unmistakable energy and personality to every performance. Audiences connected with his presence onstage and his deep love for music.

“Formed with his brother Logan while they were still in high school, The Redwalls quickly grew from a British-Invasion-inspired cover band to an internationally recognised touring act.

“Music remained central throughout Justin’s life. He continued to write, record, and collaborate, and had recently been working to bring previously unheard recordings to release. His passion, creativity, and generous spirit will be remembered by his family, his bandmates, and the countless fans whose lives he touched.

“Justin is survived by his beloved parents Martin Baren and Ann Kapp. Loving brother Logan Baren. Devoted aunts Judy (Jerry) Rothfeld and Debbie (Michael Green) Baren. Fond cousins Courtney Mcallister and Bari Spurgeon.”
