Ricki Lake’s estranged husband wants a judge to invalidate their prenuptial agreement.
The talk show host, who filed for divorce from Christian Evans on October 16 after two and a half years of marriage, citing irreconcilable differences, has been accused by the jewellery designer of committing fraud.
He claims she tricked him into signing the legal contract, which likely included how much spousal support he’d receive if they ever split, before they got married in April 2012, but has yet to explain the basis of the alleged fraud.
If the judge decides the agreement is invalid, Evans would be entitled to half or Ricki’s earnings during their marriage, according to gossip website TMZ.com.
Ricki previously stated in court documents that they legally separated on October 9 and requested to pay Christian spousal support.
The 46-year-old star, who divorced her first husband, illustrator Rob Sussman, in 2005, with whom she has two children, Milo, 17, and Owen, 13, previously credited Christian for helping her to believe in love again.
During an interview last year, she said: "For a long time I was involved in this very difficult marriage. I had all these struggles and a relationship filled with drama, which I thought was normal and healthy. But a marriage shouldn’t be drama filled. It should be loving and based on a real partnership.
"It was very tough and traumatic and my children were very young. I was married for almost 10 years and I honestly did not think that I would ever get married again. I thought, ‘I don’t need a man. I am an independent woman. I am strong. I was very cynical about marriage but then I met this amazing person and he changed my perspective on what a partnership should be and the value of sharing your life with someone."
