Queen’s former gynaecologist knighted

Queen Elizabeth’s former gynaecologist has been knighted by Prince William.

Sir Marcus Setchell, who delivered William and Duchess Catherine’s first child Prince George last July, was made a Knight Commander of the Royal Victorian Order by the tot’s father today (18.03.14).

Marcus was knighted for his services to the royal family over the years in a ceremony that took place at Buckingham Palace in London.

The queen’s gynaecologist had attended to the 87-year-old monarch for 24 years and delivered numerous royal babies before retiring from the medical profession at the end of last year.

After being knighted, Marcus described delivering young Prince George as a "lovely experience" and said overseeing the team who helped deliver the royal baby was a wonderful way to end his career.

Sir Marcus is quoted by the Daily Telegraph newspaper as saying: "It’s a great honour and it’s very nice that I was able to serve her for 24 years and that the culmination of it was that Prince George should be born.

"Being a gynaecologist and obstetrician must be one of the nicest jobs in the world.

"I think even after doing this job for 40 years every birth is exciting, moving and lovely."

Quizzed about his conversation with William, Marcus says he was given an update on Prince George.

He said: "He did make some remarks about what a bouncing baby George is now."
