Prince William announces FA Cup Final name change

The 2020 FA Cup final has been renamed as the Heads Up FA Cup final to promote mental health awareness.

Title sponsor Emirates has allowed the name change for the showpiece, which will take place on August 1 at Wembley Stadium.

FA President Prince William believes that the final can be "a moment to promote good, positive mental health for everyone".

The Duke of Cambridge added that the name change is "timely" with the concern caused by the global coronavirus pandemic.

He said: It’s quite timely bearing in mind what we’ve all been through with this pandemic (Covid-19).

"I think there’s going to be, sadly, a lot of repercussions from this in society, not just in football, in terms of people’s mental health.

"Hopefully the FA Cup can be a bit of a pivot that people can rally around."

The 37-year-old prince has led a campaign about mental health with the FA and the Heads Together Charity thought this season, as matches earlier in the competition kicked off a minute late to give fans the chance to talk about their mental health.

Godric Smith, chairman of the Heads Up campaign, added: "Given the many different impacts of the Covid-19 pandemic, it is more important than ever that we talk about our mental health and help support one another, and the Heads Up FA Cup Final will hopefully generate many more of those conversations amongst fans and the football community."

The FA Cup will resume with the quarter finals on June 27 following English football’s shutdown due to the pandemic.
