Britain’s Prince Charles wants a granddaughter.
The heir to the throne – whose daughter-in-law Duchess Catherine is a week overdue with her second child – made the admission when joking with Eric Jones, the oldest surviving member of the Welsh Guard, about the difficulties of raising girls.
The retired soldier’s daughter, Lynda Bateman, who attended a reception with Eric at Windsor Castle yesterday (30.04.15), said: "My father introduced me as his daughter and Prince Charles asked how many daughters he had.
"My father said ‘One – and that’s enough’, and Charles laughed and said ‘And we’re hoping for a granddaughter!’ "
The 66-year-old prince is already grandfather to Catherine and his son Prince William’s first child, 21-month-old Prince George, and his wife Duchess Camilla has five grandchildren from her first marriage.
Charles has previously admitted he hopes the new addition to the family will be a princess.
Speaking shortly after it was announced Catherine was pregnant again, he said last year: "I’m happy I’m going to be a grandfather again. I’m looking forward to it – but I hope it will be a girl this time."
Another attendee at the event, Maureen Morris, asked Camilla if there had been any news as to whether Catherine – who was known as Kate Middleton – had gone into labour yet.
Maureen said: "She said ‘No’. I said ‘It will be great when it happens.’
