Primal Scream remember ‘true punk’ Gary ‘Mani’ Mountfield after Manchester United tributes

Primal Scream have hailed Gary ‘Mani’ Mountfield as a “true punk and working class hero”.

The legendary bassist – who rose to fame in The Stone Roses in 1987 – went onto join psychedelic indie rock group in 1996, and his former bandmates have paid an emotional tribute after he was remembered by his beloved Manchester United before their game against Everton at Old Trafford on Monday (24.11.25).

Sharing a photo of football fans holding up a banner reading “RIP MANI”, the band wrote on Instagram: “Mani…

“Knighted by the terraces. Loved by everyone who ever knew or met him. He lit up our lives and funked up our sound.

“A true punk and working class hero. His light shines on.”

The banner was organised by supporter group The Red Army, while the fans at the game cheered when I Wanna Be Adored and This Is The One played at the stadium.

Mani died last Thursday (20.11.25) at the age of 63.

Primal Scream shared a picture of Mani on Instagram while their bassist Simone Butler was “truly in shock” at the news.

She wrote: “Truly in shock at this. An incredible loss to everyone who knew and loved him. The moment u met Mani u loved him. The most brilliant and wickedly sharp sense of humour and the biggest heart and generosity. The smile in that first pics was so absolutely him. He called me his scorpio bass sister. My heart is breaking for his boys, family and loved ones. Was meant to see him tmro in Manchester.

“A terrible and sad loss. An amazing person, so so loved by everyone all over the world X just heartbreaking.”

Mani’s death came less than a week after he announced an intimate in-conversation tour of the UK.

The Stone Roses, Primal Scream, and me would have featured the Rocks hitmaker look back on his life and career, including the Stone Roses’ legendary 1990 Spike Island gig.
