Primal Scream and Stone Roses lead tributes to Gary ‘Mani’ Mountfield

The Stone Roses and Primal Scream have led tributes to Gary ‘Mani’ Mountfield.

The bassist passed away on Thursday (20.11.25) at the age of 63 and his former bands have remembered their “wonderful brother”.

The Stone Roses wrote on their official account: “RIP our wonderful brother Mani. The greatest bass player and friend we could ever have wished for.”

Meanwhile, frontman Ian Brown commented: “REST IN PEACE MANi X (sic)”

Primal Scream shared a picture of Mani on Instagram while their bassist Simone Butler was “truly in shock” at the news.

She wrote: “Truly in shock at this. An incredible loss to everyone who knew and loved him. The moment u met Mani u loved him. The most brilliant and wickedly sharp sense of humour and the biggest heart and generosity. The smile in that first pics was so absolutely him. He called me his scorpio bass sister. My heart is breaking for his boys, family and loved ones. Was meant to see him tmro in Manchester.

“A terrible and sad loss. An amazing person, so so loved by everyone all over the world X just heartbreaking.”

New Order also paid tribute and admitted they were “really sorry and shocked” by the news.

The wrote: “We are really sorry and shocked to hear of the passing of Mani. He was a great guy, good fun and a father to two boys. Long may he live in the hearts and minds of all his family, friends and fans.”

Oasis frontman Liam Gallagher is “absolutely devastated” by the loss of his “hero”.

He posted on X: “IN TOTAL SHOCK AND ABSOLUTELY DEVASTATED ON HEARING THE NEWS ABOUT MANI MY HERO RIP RKID LG (sic)”

And Courteneers’ Liam Fray was equally distraught.

He posted: “Absolutely devastated to hear the news about Mani. This is what true sadness feels like. Everyone who knew you will miss you so much. Thank you for the good times, every one of them was a privilege. Thinking of all your family and friends. Rest in Peace Brother.”

The Charlatans frontman Tim Burgess paid tribute to his “beautiful friend”.

He wrote: “One of the absolute best in every way – such a beautiful friend. Love you Mani xx Never to be forgotten.””

Mani’s death came less than a week after he announced an intimate in-conversation tour of the UK.

The Stone Roses, Primal Scream, and me would have featured the Rocks hitmaker look back on his life and career, including the Stone Roses’ legendary 1990 Spike Island gig.

Mani – whose wife Imelda died of cancer in 2023 – shot to fame with the Stone Roses but they went their separate ways in 1996 and he went on to join Primal Scream.

But in 2011, he announced he had left the band to reunite with the Stone Roses for a huge stadium tour.
