Pretty Woman to open on Broadway in 2018

Bryan Adams is writing songs for a ‘Pretty Woman’ musical.
The ‘(Everything I Do) I Do It For You’ singer and his long-term writing partner Jim Vallance are penning an original score for the Broadway production, with a book by the late Garry Marshall and J.F. Lawton, who worked on the original 1990 movie as director and screenwriter respectively.
The show will see ‘Les Miserables’ actress Samantha Barks make her Broadway debut as Vivian, the prostitute portrayed on the big screen by Julia Roberts, while ‘Nashville’ star Steve Kazee – who won a Tony award for his last stint on the New York stage in 2012’s Once’ – will take on Richard Gere’s role as her love interest Edward.
Lead producer Paula Wagner promised: "Pretty Woman: The Musical will have the heart, humour, warmth and joy of the film, with a stunning original score."
After previously bringing ‘Legally Blonde’ and ‘Kinky Boots’ to the stage, director and choreographer Jerry Mitchell will be at the helm of the ‘Pretty Woman’ musical.
He spent over a year working with Gary on the project, before the veteran filmmaker passed away in July 2016.
The production will open on Broadway in Autumn 2018, but before then there will be a limited five-week out-of-town try-out run at Chicago’s Oriental Theatre from March 13, 2018.
Julia previously admitted it took her until several years after ‘Pretty Woman’s release before she truly appreciated how popular it was.
She said: "It is not a bad movie to have follow you around for 25-odd years. I think it takes years to realise that level of how it has been absorbed into popular culture.
"It takes this many years because those are the words that I hear the most from people. It is nice, at least it is a nice title, you know it could be worse."
