Piers Morgan gives update on Kate Garraway’s husband condition and confirms Good Morning Britain appearance

Piers Morgan says Kate Garraway’s husband isn’t "in any way out of the woods".

The ‘Good Morning Britain’ presenter has given an update on his co-star’s partner Derek Draper after she revealed he has finally opened his eyes after being in a coma since battling coronavirus in March, and Kate will appear on the ITV breakfast show on Wednesday (08.07.20) to give an update on his health.

Speaking on Monday’s (06.07.20) episode, Piers said: "We’re going to talk to Kate on Wednesday before we go off for the summer.

"She’s going to have something more to say about this but it’s certainly premature at the moment to think that Derek is in any way out of the woods, sadly, on this and he remains in a very serious critical condition."

The 55-year-old broadcaster also read out a statement from Kate, and suggested the outlook isn’t as optimistic as some might believe.

Her representatives said: "These headlines are a sign of a level of optimism that might not be justified.

"We hope as does Kate that there will be more evidence of a recovery. But it will be a very slow and uncertain path."

Kate, 53, recently revealed her husband has started to slowly wake up from his coma.

She said: "I really believe he can hear. When medical staff say: ‘Good morning, Derek,’ he sometimes opens his eyes. We and the doctors are doing everything we can so that he can start to recover."

She added that she and her children – Darcey, 14, and William, 10 – are still doing "everything [they] can" to help bring Derek round to full consciousness.

She added: "We’re keeping positive and doing everything we can to bring him round. The children and I communicate with him every day on FaceTime, while a nurse holds his iPad."

The presenter has been warned on multiple occasions her husband may never emerge from his coma, and doctors still say he could persist in his current state.

While Kate remains hopeful her husband will recover, she has decided to "get on with life" instead of "living at the end of the phone" waiting for updates on his condition.
