Peter Hook has no plans for New Order reunion but Oasis could hold the key

Peter Hook has suggested Oasis could help him form a truce with New Order.

The 70-year-old musician is looking forward to attending the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame later this year as both New Order and Joy Division will be inducted as a single act, and he has insisted he has no plans to “stand with” his former bandmate on stage at the ceremony after long held animosity between them.

He told Rolling Stone magazine: “Maybe Liam and Noel could be the intermediaries that you’re looking for.

“They might be like, ‘OK you two. Let’s shake hands and get up there and play Transmission, Love Will Tear Us Apart, and Blue Monday.”

After Ian Curtis’ death in 1980, Hook, Bernard Sumner and Stephen Morris kept going as New Order with the latter’s wife Gillan Gilbert.

Hook left in 2007, and he was angry that the band carried on without him in 2011, and later sued in 2015 over business practices.

They reached a “full and final” settlement out of court in 2017, which allowed the others to keep using the band name, while he tours with Peter Hook and the Light, often playing albums from both New Order and Joy Division.

He told Billboard: “What they did in 2011 was, frankly, disgusting, and I can’t forgive it … so I won’t be borrowing their ball, shall we say, for any kind of game.

“I still do think it’s a travesty they use the New Order name when they are not New Order. They haven’t said they’re going; I have no idea, to be honest. I am gonna go, definitely. I’m looking forward to it.”

He admitted that they have all “just been acting like petulant, spoiled children”.

However, he conceded that a reunion isn’t entirely out of the question.

He told Rolling Stone: “As we all know, when you meet … I’m sure there’s someone you can’t stand, and you don’t see him or her or whoever.

“You think you’d kill her if you came across her. And chances are if she came up and gave you a hug, you’d go, [sweetly] ‘Ohhhh.’ [Laughs.] So how the hell do I know?

“If Bernard pops his head around and goes, ‘Hey Hooky, sorry about that eight-year legal battle that cost you six years’ wages. I’m really sorry about it. We should maybe have just had a chat about it.’

“So you never know, dear. Life is full of surprises. I’m sure that could be a lovely one. Let’s face it, you couldn’t have better mentors than Liam and Noel.”
