Pet Shop Boys to receive Godlike Genius gong

Pet Shop Boys are set to take home the Godlike Genius gong at the NME Awards 2017.
The electronic pop duo – comprised of Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe – will receive one of their biggest honours to date as they are presented with the prize at the upcoming awards ceremony held at London’s O2 Brixton Academy on February 15.
The most successful musical two-piece in history will also close the show performing songs from their career spanning more than three decades, including tracks from 2016’s ‘SUPER’, which entered the UK album charts at number three.
Of their accolade, the ‘West End Girls’ hitmakers said: "We’re really happy to win NME’s Godlike Genius award and we’re looking forward to playing at the awards show this year."
NME editor-in-chief Mike Williams added: "For three decades, Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe have been pushing the boundaries of pop music, releasing a series of consistently excellent singles and albums and working to blur the boundaries between art, music and social commentary. Their influence on pop culture is undeniable and the list of artists they’ve worked with is a mini rock ‘n’ roll hall of fame. Pet Shop Boys’ stage performances and festival shows are never anything short of spectacular, and we’re honoured that our latest Godlike Geniuses will grace the Brixton stage for an extra-special set of hits to close the VO5 NME Awards 2017."
They follow in the footsteps of last year’s recipients Coldplay and previous title holders Paul Weller, The Cure, Dave Grohl, Noel Gallagher, Johnny Marr and Blondie.
It follows the news that grime superstar Wiley is to take home the Outstanding Contribution to Music prize.
Pet Shop Boys join previously announced performers Dua Lipa and Bastille.
This year’s shortlist sees Beyonce lead the way with five nods for Best Album for ‘Lemonade’, Hero of the Year, Music Moment of the Year, Best International Female and Best Video for ‘Formation’.
British rockers Bastille follow behind with four nominations for Best British Band, Best Album for ‘Wild World’, Best Track for ‘Good Grief’ and Best Live Band.
Voting is open now at www.nme.com/awardsvote
