Patrick Wilson: The Conjuring 2 is a deep horror film

Patrick Wilson says the ‘The Conjuring 2’ goes "deeper" into what horror is.
The 42-year-old actor reprises his role as paranormal investigator Ed Warren in the supernatural sequel and has revealed that director James Wan didn’t want to rely on clichés of the genre for scares.
In an interview with website HeyUGuys.com, he said: "One of the things that James wanted to dispel (was) this is not the creepy house at the end of the street. This is like every other house on that block, and I think that’s important. It becomes less about obvious scare, and becomes about something a little deeper."
‘The Conjuring 2’ sees Ed and his wife Lorraine Warren – played by Vera Farmiga – travel to North London to help a single mother who is raising her four children in a house plagued by malicious spirits.
The story is based on the real-life case of the ‘Enfield Poltergeist’, a famous paranormal investigation which took place between 1977 and 1979.
As well as showing the Warrens come into the house to save a "family in peril", Wan’s film also shows the negative effect the haunting has on their relationship as a couple and Wilson says it’s a very important part of the plot.
Wilson – whose previous horror credits include the ‘Insidious’ franchise and ‘Hard Candy’ – mused: "When Ed and Lorraine come into that world they’re trying to understand the world too, so we haven’t seen everything that’s gone on. Ignorance is bliss in a lot of that. The way these movies are structured, that’s sort of refreshing. Because we’re used to seeing, ‘This is the family in peril, these are your main characters’ and then people come in to help and then it’s like, ‘Yay, we’ve fixed the problem.’ It’s nice to see where Ed and Lorraine are as well, and what it costs them. There’s humanity to both sides, which I think is important."
