Bruno Mars says you don't need a fragrance to be a star.
The 'Locked Out of Heaven' singer performed during the Super Bowl Half Time Show at the beginning of this month - one of the most watched TV moments of the year in the US - and is proud he achieved it without putting his name to an aftershave, which it has been suggested is a benchmark for stardom, after successful perfumes from stars including Lady Gaga, Britney Spears and Beyonce.
Speaking to talk show host Ellen DeGeneres, he said: "Listen, any young, aspiring musicians out there, if music is what you want to do, if music is what you love and your passion. It doesn't take a fragrance, its not about the tabloids, it's about you putting in the work, practicing everyday, practicing your vocals, practicing your instrument, practicing songwriting.
"Hopefully one day you write the song the whole world wants to get down to and I promise you, I promise you one day you're going to have your moment to shine."
Bruno, 28, also acknowledged his headline slot - which included him being joined by The Red Hot Chili Peppers for a rendition of their hit 'Give It Away' - came at the start of his career, but he was eager to seize the opportunity.
He added: "I know it was early; it's very early in my career. I've only got two albums so I don't have the legacy or anything like that, but you don't know you know tomorrow's not promised, so I had to go for it."

Liam Hemsworth has been spotted on a date with Nina Dobrev.
'The Hunger Games' star Liam - who split from fiancé Miley Cyrus last year - was in the Corner Tavern in Atlanta, US, on Friday (07.02.14) with 'The Vampire Diaries' actress and an eyewitness says they even ended their night with a "sensual" kiss.
Jahti Anderson told Celebuzz.com: "They stayed around two to three hours and Nina left before Liam, and as she was leaving they gave each other a good night kiss... [and] she ran off into a car service with her friend.
"The kisses were on the lips publicly outside of the bar ... and it was three sensual kisses on the lips. They stuck together pretty much the whole time, but I think Nina got sick of pictures [with fans] because Liam was the highlight, so to speak."
While they were with other friends and happily posed for pictures separately, Jahti claims they acted like they were on a date.
She added: "They were there together and were with a couple other friends.
"They were having a great time. They were definitely acting couple-y. They were drinking beers and mostly standing and talking near the bar."
Liam, 24, is in Atlanta filming 'The Hunger Games: Mockingjay', while Nina, 25, is working on the latest episodes of 'The Vampire Diaries' in the same city.
Liam dated Miley for three years before getting engaged in June 2012, but called it off last September. Miley, now 21, later said she "wouldn't change" having been engaged, but thought she was too young to get married at the time.
Nina previously dated her 'The Vampire Diaries' co-star Ian Somerhalder for three years, but they split in May 2013.

Rosie Huntington-Whiteley will marry Jason Statham this summer.
The pair - who live together in Los Angeles - have been dating since 2010 and are said to have plans to tie the knot near the blonde beauty's parents home town in south west England.
A source told Yahoo Celebrity: "They're getting married this summer, it'll be a country wedding where Rosie grew up in Devon, close to her parents' farm.
"They've finally set a date and both agreed England should be where they wed, despite their closest friends living in LA."
The pair split last September for a short period but it seems the Hollywood hunk is ready to fully commit to her since he knows how important marriage is to her.
The source added: "Rosie and Jason have had a few problems lately but they've come through because Jason finally understand how important it is for her that they tie the knot.
"Jason has always been reluctant, but Rosie's ready to become a mother and she wants to be married before they have a family."
Rosie recently revealed she's got "exciting" times coming up in her personal life but was keen to stay tight lipped about details.
She explained to The Times newspaper: "Well, a few things in my personal life [are coming up in the future] that are very exciting that I probably can't elaborate on. And very exciting work things."
She also implied that motherhood could be on the horizon and claims it's a role she's looks "forward to".
When asked if she's planning for a baby right now, she replied: "Maybe. I look forward to the many things that come with being a woman, having children, motherhood, and all of that."

'Total Divas' star Brie Bella is a big fan of 'Keeping Up with the Kardashians' and 'Duck Dynasty'.
The WWE Diva was a lover of reality TV before she began appearing in the E! fly-on-the-wall series with her twin sister Nikki - with whom she wrestles with as the tag team The Bella Twins - initially getting hooked on the Kim Kardashian-led show.
She then became an avid viewer of 'Toddlers & Tiaras' and 'Duck Dynasty', which chronicles the lives of the Robertson family and their successful duck-call manufacturing business 'Duck Commander.
Speaking exclusively to BANG Showbiz, Brie said: "I used to absolutely love 'Keeping Up with the Kardashians' but I've got really into 'Toddlers & Tiaras' lately. With those mothers it's like you can't make this up, this is amazing! 'Duck Dynasty' is fascinating to me, because it's just a world that I can't relate to at all. I really enjoy watching that."
Despite being a reality TV star and a regular on weekly WWE shows 'RAW' and 'SmackDown', Brie insists she and her fiancé, WWE Superstar Daniel Dryan, don't watch a lot of television.
The brunette beauty - who will be visiting the UK in May on the WWE tour - also admits it took her and Daniel a while to get used to being filmed round the clock for 'Total Divas' and constantly being followed by cameras.
The Bella Twins - whose fiancé Daniel will be competing on the 'WWE Elimination Chamber' pay-per-view on February 23, which is available to watch on Sky Sports Box Office - explained: "I'm not the biggest TV fan, Daniel and I don't even have cable at home, we're not TV people at all. I just watch whatever I can download on my computer.
"When we started 'Total Divas' it was really hard at first, because you notice the cameras. But after around two weeks we just totally didn't them. My sister is very loud and funny, and as you can see I'm much quieter than her and so is Daniel. He would just be at our house, staring at the crew and would say, 'We don't live an exciting life, is this fun for you guys? Because we don't know if this is fun.' They were like, 'This is great, pretend we're not here, don't talk to us.' Now we're so used to it, we'll say things and then we'll look at each other and be like, 'Gosh, did they catch that?' "

Justin Bieber was reportedly caught on tape at the time of the egg attack on his neighbour's house.
New surveillance footage showing the 'Boyfriend' singer near the property in Calabasas, California - which suffered an estimated $20,000 of damage in the incident - when it was hit by eggs last month is being considered as critical evidence in the case against the star.
According to gossip website TMZ, Justin isn't seen holding any eggs but he is reportedly heard shouting abuse at his neighbour.
In the short clip, a man thought to be Bieber is heard shouting: "F**k you! I got another one for you actually."
However, sources close to the star have disputed the authenticity of the video, which is too dark to clearly make out the 'Baby' hitmaker.
The reports come after the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department passed the case on to the Los Angeles County District Attorney and strongly recommended that the 'Beauty and a Beat' singer be punished to the fullest extent of the law.
The District Attorney is expected to make a decision on the case - which was originally filed as a misdemeanour but could become a felony due to the extent of the damage - in approximately one week.

Zayn Malik is being forced to help plan his wedding.
The One Direction hunk got engaged to Perrie Edwards five months ago and the Little Mix singer says he tried to "get out" of organising their nuptials by saying she could make all the decisions, but she has insisted he do some of the work too.
Perrie said: "He tried to get out of it. He said, 'You know what? The wedding, it's all about the lady.' He went, 'Honestly, it's your day. You're the princess. You go all out and then just let me know what you want.
"I went 'You're not getting out of it that easy, love. You're planning it with me, thank you very much.' He thought he was clever, but no, I'm one step ahead."
The 20-year-old singer joked her stunning diamond ring is the "best part" of being engaged, before admitting she loves the fact she can settle down with Zayn "forever".

" No I was joking...just knowing that I'm going to be with someone that I love forever."
While the couple haven't yet set a wedding date, Zayn's mother, Trisha Malik, recently said she expects them to tie the knot later this year.

The 46-year-old TV presenter is in the midst of a gruelling 500 mile triathlon for the charity - which will see her cycling, running and swimming from Edinburgh to London - and she had to be carried back to dry land after the scary incident while swimming the length of Lake Windermere.
Thankfully, the 'Got to Dance' host - who has now begun cycling in the next stage of her challenge - recovered quickly with the help of a hot beverage and some food.
She tweeted after: "I'm ok. That was hairy. Thank you for all your support. (sic)"
Davina added to BBC News: "The moment I got in the water my chest felt crushed. I couldn't do front crawl, I couldn't put my head under water, I couldn't breathe.
"I kept trying to lift my arm to swim, trying to pull the crawl out of the bag, but I couldn't even get it up. I ended up doing doggy paddle!
"Although I'm shattered I never felt unsafe, I'm in the best possible hands."
The 46-year-old star began her seven-day challenge on Saturday (08.02.14) and caused concern when she exhibited signs of hypothermia after braving freezing temperatures.
A Sport Relief spokesperson said Davina was "undergoing a medical assessment after suffering suspected signs of hypothermia", however, she was later cleared to continue the triathlon.

Semi Precious Weapons have reassured fans their third album 'Aviation' will be released this year.
The Los Angeles rock band experienced "record label drama" but are now managed by RedZone Records, run by famous producer Tricky Stewart, who is known for his work with Beyonce, Rihanna and Frank Ocean.
Frontman Justin Tranter told BANG Showbiz: "Sadly the album was pushed back because of stereotypical label bulls**t. The label drama is over and the album finally comes out at the end of April."
The record 'Aviation' is the follow-up to the band's second album 'You Love You', which came out in 2010, and is hoped to be released in the UK in May following the US date.
Justin, 33, joked: "The fans are angry, I get tweets every day, they're gonna f***ing kill me if I don't put something out."
The glamorous rock band - also made up of Dan Crean, Stevy Pyne and Cole Whittle - say their goal for the new record was to simply write the best songs they could and they plan to tour after its release with a number of US and UK gigs.
Justin continued: "The UK fans are great, they're so passionate, and they actually love the music and not just the aesthetic.
"We're hoping to get back this summer, or maybe even late spring. "We have had such great experiences with the UK. It was a pretty surreal moment when Kate Moss came to one of our gigs. She couldn't have been sweeter, she loves the band and looked so gorgeous, I wanted to poke my eyes out."
Semi Precious Weapons are also famous for being pals with Lady Gaga, who was their opening act before she become one of the world's biggest stars.
Justin added: "Gaga is the hardest working woman on the planet. Even with how crazy her life is we still check in with each other a couple of times a month.
"If you go out in public with Gaga, you have a great f**king time but you can't really talk. When we do hang out now, it's in private, where we can enjoy each other's company."
The new album from Semi Precious Weapons, 'Aviation', will be released on April 8 in the US.

Busta Rhymes is set to perform at Bestival this year.
The hip-hop star will mark his first appearance at a UK festival this September when he joins the main stage line-up at the event, which takes place in the Isle of Wight, England.
Festival organiser Rob da Bank said: "Woo hah people! Yes it's true, Busta Rhymes has got you all in check and he's coming to Bestival for his first ever UK festi appearance!
"I'm such a Busta fan and it's amazing not just to see him back in the charts with another banger with 'Thank You' but also to know he's getting on the ferry and bringing it to Bestival!"
The 41-year-old rapper - who has been nominated for 11 Grammy awards in the past - will be playing some unreleased material ahead of the launch of his forthcoming album 'Extinction Level Event 2'.
Busta will play his set in the slot before the headliners, but it has not yet been announced what day he will be performing.
Meanwhile, OutKast have been named as the first headliners for this year's themed Desert Island Disco event, with Foals, Beck, Disclosure, Laura Mvula, Major Lazer and London Grammar also taking to the stage over the weekend.
More acts are due to be announced in coming months.
Bestival will take place between September 4-7.

Marco Pierre White doesn't think the British public will ever tire of food-based TV programming.
The celebrity chef says the popularity of shows like 'The Great British Bake Off' and 'MasterChef' stems from the nation's love of good food and he is confident the trend will continue in the future.
He exclusively told BANG Showbiz: "The British love to cook, they love to bake, they love to garden. It's natural. I don't think the food TV show market is becoming saturated at all, the figures would be dropping and the best TV shows about food aren't. The reason why there's more and more is because it's what the public demand, it's what the public want!"
Marco is due to return to our TV screens with his new pet project, a journey of culinary discovery across France, which sees him sampling the country's best Michelin-starred dishes.
He explained: "I'm working on a new production which is almost complete. I'm going to France, going to all the great restaurants that I never went to as a child. I never dined in a Michelin star restaurant as a child, it's something I never did."
Marco Pierre White and David Walliams have joined the judging panel for the Walkers' Do Us A Flavour competition, asking Brits to suggest a great new crisp flavour with one lucky person winning £1 million.
