Joey Essex says his mother's suicide affected his learning.
The former 'The Only Way Is Essex' favourite believes the trauma of his mother Tina hanging herself when he was just 10 years old could be responsible for his lack of general knowledge.
He explains in his new book, 'Being Reem': "Some people reckoned I stopped learning because of what happened to my mum. Almost like I froze in time. I don't know about that but I remember it hitting me really hard."
Joey - who can't tell the time, despite owning a £70,000 Rolex watch - and his older sister Frankie Essex didn't know their mother had taken her own life until a schoolchild blurted it out in the playground two years after the event.
In an extract published in The Sun newspaper, he said: "We didn't know mum had committed suicide for about two years. Dad didn't tell us how it happened to start with, he just said she fell over in an accident.
"I guess he was trying to protect us and I don't think he wanted to deal with it himself. I was convinced she was staying in a hotel and was coming back. As I started getting older I began to get p***ed off.
"I'd constantly say to Dad, 'Can you please find out where mum's gone or how she's died?' "
Despite growing up without a mum, Joey resents people describing suicide as the coward's way out and understands why she did it.
He said: "Deep down, she was ill and unhappy. I was always confused about what was wrong with my mum. She was often in hospital; and I never understood why.
"Someone told me committing suicide is a selfish thing to do because you're hurting other people. But how can you say that? You don't know what the person is going through. To commit suicide you've got to be in another level of pain."

Michael French is to leave 'EastEnders'.
The actor, who plays David Wicks, will bow out of the BBC One soap later this year but bosses are keeping the star's exit storyline tightly under wraps.
According to Digital Spy, Michael only signed a short contract to reprise his famous role last year, but agreed to extend his deal when new executive producer Dominic Treadwell-Collins took over the show earlier this year.
Viewers have seen David planning his wedding to long-term love interest Carol Jackson (Lindsey Coulson) in recent months and the couple are expected to tie the knot later this month.
However, David's recent kiss with Nikki Spraggan (Rachel Wilde) has come back to haunt him as the vivacious blonde has been trying to lure him away from Carol.
Michael originally starred on 'EastEnders' from 1993 to 1996. He later returned in 2012 for on-screen mum Pat Evans' final episodes, and rejoined the soap full-time in September 2013.
While the 51-year-old actor is set to exit Walford, fan favourite Jean Slater, played by Gillian Wright, is coming back for a short stint to support her daughter Stacey Branning (Lacey Turner), who awaits trial for the murder of Archie Mitchell.
Gillian said: "I feel very honoured to be asked to reprise my role as Jean Slater, for a short while. The storyline promises to be challenging and exciting! I look forward to playing again with old friends and new and to pick up the special relationship between Stacey and Jean."

Ant and Dec once tried to buy the 'Byker Grove' youth club building but had their bid rejected.
The national treasures, who won two awards for 'Ant and Dec's Saturday Night Takeaway' at the British Academy Television Awards last night (18.05.14), first shot to fame on the BBC children's drama series filmed in Newcastle and wanted to help others wanting to get into the industry by buying the 13th Century Benwell Tower and using it to hold workshops for young people.
Ant told BANG Showbiz: "A few years ago, I don't know whether I should say this, but why not? We tried to buy the building that 'Byker Grove' was made in and turn it into a performing arts centre but we didn't get it. So it's something we've definitely looked at [helping others]."
It was reported in 2012 that the turreted Victorian building would instead become an Islamic school and it was originally put on the market for £1 million.
Dec went on to talk about how the pair, who also present 'Britain's Got Talent' and 'I'm a Celebrity... Get Me Out of Here!', still want to help children realise their dreams.
He said: "If we made it, there must be other kids in the north east who can do it too.
"We've talked about it [helping young kids] but we haven't kind of finalised any details yet. Hopefully we'll be able to facilitate other kids, like us from the same background, to hopefully get into the industry in some way. But also in Scotland and Wales. Just because they're not from London doesn't mean they can't do it."
Talking about their awards for Entertainment Programme and Entertainment Performance, which they were given at the ceremony at London's Theatre Royal, Dec added: "It's just like a dream, I go to work every day with my best mate, we're winning awards and having a great time and working on amazing shows. It doesn't really get better than this."

Cilla Black almost cried when she received a standing ovation at the British Academy Television Awards last night (18.05.14).
The 70-year-old presenter, who was honoured with the Special Award at the ceremony at London's Theatre Royal, admitted she was overcome with emotion on stage.
She told BANG Showbiz: "I nearly went tonight [and cried], when the whole of the audience stood up. I thought, 'This is for me?' I've been doing exactly what I've wanted to do all my life. For me, to have the whole audience stand up was amazing. It's a great honour to get the BAFTA."
The star, who will be played by BAFTA-winning actress Sheridan Smith in a new drama, claims she's only ever been herself and has never tried to be someone she isn't.
Cilla said: "My life is flashing before my eyes but to have someone in your own lifetime play you ... I feel so honoured and so pleased."
Asked if she wanted Sheridan to play a sexy version of her, she replied: "I'm not sexy ... really. God knows I've tried."
Cilla, who previously said she wanted to die at 75, admits she "lied" and presenter Sir Bruce Forsyth, who she bumped into at the BAFTAs, told her he wasn't impressed by her comments.
She said: "He told me off, he said, 'I heard you wanted to die at 75', and I said, 'I lied.' I said that four years ago. I did lie, now I'm in my 71st year.
"I've lived by the book being a star, not going out when you don't want to be seen. I can't stand people who say, 'I want my privacy', then they got to Mahiki [the London club]. Stay at home why don't you?"
The star, who has sons Robert, Ben and Jack with late husband Bobby Willis, also claims becoming a mother is what she is most proud of in her life.
She said: "I always wanted six children but then Bobby didn't agree, but I have three fabulous boys and they've all really done me proud. They'll all in the business behind the scenes in television and take care of me."

WWE Diva Layla wants to compete on 'Strictly Come Dancing'.
The sexy star - who was born and raised in London - has a professional dancing background and she would love the opportunity to return to her home country and show her skills on the ballroom TV show.
Layla - who is currently partnered with ballroom dancing Superstar Fandango - told BANG Showbiz: "I've been watching 'Strictly Come Dancing' and I have to say I definitely want to be a part of that. That's something that I'm looking to do in the near future ... I'm absolutely up for doing it, I want to come back to England and settle down at home and I'd love to do that show. I think I'd be a character on it, everyone would either love me or hate me but I'd definitely get a reaction."
The 36-year-old competitor is also confident she could step in and take over hosting duties from Tess Daly or Claudia Winkleman - who will present the main show with Tess on the next series after Sir Bruce Forsyth retired from the BBC programme.
She said: "I want to say congratulations to Abbey Clancy who won last year and not only that I have to say congrats to Tess Daly and Claudia Winkleman, girl power! But if they ever need a replacement they better make sure they call me up. I'll come and host the show."
Before arriving in World Wrestling Entertainment as the winner of the WWE Diva Search contest in 2006 Layla danced for basketball team Miami Heat and for numerous rappers and pop stars, including Kanye West, P. Diddy and Sir Elton John and she believes that experience would serve her well on 'Strictly...'
She said: "It's great being with Fandango because I get to go back to my dancing background. I miss dancing, it's something I've always done since I was a little girl. I trained at Italia Conti ... I've danced with a lot of stars in the UK like Ms. Dynamite, Elton John and Blue as well as people like P. Diddy, Mace, Kanye West and Jamie Foxx in the US."
Layla and a host of other Superstars such as Hulk Hogan and John Cena are currently in the UK for the 'WWE Live WrestleMania Revenge' tour.
'RAW' comes to The O2 arena in London tonight (19.05.14) with 'SmackDown' following at the same venue on Tuesday evening (20.05.14).
Live shows also take place at the Motorpoint Arena in Sheffield on Tuesday, Belfast's Odyssey Arena on Wednesday (21.05.14) and The O2 in Dublin on Thursday (22.05.14).

Sir Mick Jagger has become a great-grandfather for the first time.
The 70-year-old Rolling Stones rocker's granddaughter Assisi Jackson and her boyfriend Alex Key welcomed a daughter into the world over the weekend, HELLO! reports.
The new arrival - whose name has not yet been announced - is the first grandchild for Assisi's mother Jade, 42, who is due to give birth to a baby boy next month.
Assisi, 21, previously admitted her grandfather was delighted she was expecting a baby.
She said: "He said, 'Well done,' and I said, 'I didn't have to try too hard.' "
However, she admitted the 'Paint it Black' star - who was left devastated in March by the suicide of his long-term girlfriend L'Wren Scott - was unlikely to be calling himself great-grandad.
She said: "I imagine it's nice to be a great-grandad - although I'm not sure he likes the idea of getting old, or being called one.
"I call him Mick - I wouldn't start calling him Grandpa."
Despite her young age, Assisi insisted the time was right for her to have a baby.
She said: "I grew up quite quickly and wouldn't have considered having a child if I was doing what my friends are doing at this stage, messing around.
"I don't drink, I don't smoke and I'm very settled."

Michael Jackson's brother cried as he watched his hologram performance.
Jackie Jackson thinks choreographers Rich and Tone Talauega did an "amazing" job in making the virtual likeness of the late star - who died of acute Propofol intoxication in June 2009 - so convincing as he performed to 'Slave to Rhythm' at last night's (18.05.14) Billboard Music Awards.
Jackie told Billboard: "When he started walking and dancing, I was teary-eyed.
"It's hard to please Michael's fans and Michael... I'm telling you it's amazing."
There had been a huge demand for a hologram performance from Michael, but John Branca, the executor of the late star's estate, felt the music awards show was the perfect setting.
He said: "It's so important to experience Michael Jackson in a live setting. This is something where we wanted a live performance in front of a live audience and nothing speaks to that more than an awards show."
Despite the performance at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas being the first public airing of 'Slave to Rhythm', it may not be the next single from Michael's posthumous album 'Xscape'.
Epic Records chairman L.A. Reid said: "It's certainly one of the songs [being considered].
"We pick the first single; fans pick the second."

Kim, Khloe and Kourtney Kardashian have found a site for their Dash store in The Hamptons.
Restauranteur Irma Herzog - whose Driver's Seat Restaurant was investigated last year after an employee was diagnosed with hepatitis A - has risked the wrath of local residents in Southampton by "betraying" the upmarket village and leasing an art gallery space adjacent to her eatery to the sisters, who are planning to spend the summer in the resort for new reality show 'Kourtney & Khloe Take The Hamptons'.
One outraged source told the New York Post newspaper: "Southamptonites are abuzz that Irma Herzog has betrayed their village . . . Will Irma also be bringing back another bout of hepatitis?
"Now she brings trash to her backyard. People are lining up to buy Irma's property and get her out of town. She is a piranha."
It was previously claimed residents in the coastal spot were furious that the "attention-seeking family" were planning a new base in Southampton.
One source said recently: "They have been looking at property on Little Plains Road in Southampton, and already the neighbours are up in arms about it.
"They don't want the hassle of the entourage, the cameras, the paparazzi and all the fanfare that comes with this attention-seeking family."
Kourtney's long-term boyfriend Scott Disick and their children, Mason, four, and Penelope, 19 months, will also be joining the sisters over the summer.
According to the village website, filming on any beaches is not permitted from Memorial Day at the end of May through to September 30.

Jennifer Lawrence has shared her secret hiccups cure.
The 'Hunger Games: Mockingjay' actress insists gulping water while she lowers her arms from above her head helps her get rid of hiccups.
She said: "The only thing that ever works for getting rid of hiccups for me is when I drink water and raise my arms over my head and lower them very slowly."
Jennifer, 23, did just that in front of a crowd of reporters at the Vanity Fair Cannes Film Festival party.
Her co-star Josh Hutcherson gave her the water as Jennifer slowly lowered her arms and after a minute, true to her word, she'd managed to beat it.
The blonde beauty recently revealed she's afraid fans will "get sick" of her after her big screen success in recent years thanks to roles in the 'Hunger Games' and 'X-Men' franchises.
She said: "Nobody can stay beloved forever. People are going to get sick of me."
However, the 'American Hustle' actress admits she most worries about her behaviour away from the camera because she thinks she is often "annoying" in public.
Jennifer added: "I'm way too annoying because I get on red carpets and I'm really hyper, most likely because I've been drinking, and I can't not photo-bomb somebody if it's a good opportunity."

Miley Cyrus covered The Beatles' classic 'Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds' at the 2014 Billboard Music Awards last night (18.05.14).
The 'Wrecking Ball' singer, who appeared via video link, was first bleeped by ABC producers when she slipped up while thanking fans for her Top Streaming Song (Video) and Top Streaming Artist gongs.
The 21-year-old star said: "Thank you to everybody for making this sh*t possible," adding, "Oops sorry, forgot I was on ABC."
The singer, who was still in Britain as part of her Bangerz World Tour, then performed a cover of The Beatles' song for the Billboard audience with The Flaming Lips' vocalist Wayne Coyne.
Miley wore a sequin body suit emblazoned with a pair of jumbo lips for her acceptance video, before taking to the stage in a gold cape and pink face-paint, while Wayne donned a red one-piece and tinsel silver cape.
The performance aired live on ABC from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.
Miley turned to The Flaming Lips' music after she called off her engagement and her dog Floyd was killed by coyotes and she has since been in the studio with the band.
She said: "Floyd and I always listened to the Flaming Lips. So now when I listen to that music, I totally feel the presence of him still being there, you know?"

The 'I Luh Ya Papi' singer took to the stage at the Las Vegas' MGM Grand Garden Arena to accept the gong after a video montage of A-list stars including Britney Spears, Ricky Martin, Pitbull and Taylor Swift shared their memories of her.
Rihanna also told Jennifer: "You continue to break down barriers and inspire girls."
J.Lo accepted the award from presenters Ricky and Iggy Azalea and said: "Oh my God! What the heck? Music has always been my first love."
She continued to thank God, her fans, family, friends and boyfriend Casper Smart, who was sitting in the audience with her mother Guadalupe and sister Lynda Lopez.
The star added: "All you little ones sitting on the living room floor, have faith, dream big, think big. And know that anything is possible, you never know where you might end up."
J.Lo performed twice during the night, with long-time collaborator Pitbull and Claudia Lette, to premiere the official anthem of this year's FIFA World Cup, 'We Are One (Ole Ola)', and her song 'First Love' from her new album 'A.K.A'.

Benedict Cumberbatch will hit the big screen in Iraq war drama 'The Yellow Birds'.
The 37-year-old star will play a sergeant who takes two young soldiers played by Tye Sheridan and Will Poulter under his wing as they are deployed, reports Variety.com.
David Lowery is set to helm the picture which is based on Kevin Powers novel of the same name and the filmmaker revealed he's more interested in the characters personal stories rather than the conflict they get caught in.
Lowery said: "I never had any interest in making a war film until Jeff and Evan brought me the novel by Kevin Powers.
"And perhaps I still don't, because while Powers' story takes place during wartime, it isn't about the conflict. It is about characters who find themselves caught up in war, but who struggle to not let it define them. I fell in love with them. It is a beautiful and deeply personal tale, relayed through images and memories, and I am excited to have the chance to bring it to the screen."
Cumberbatch will next be seen in 'The Imitation Game', while Sheridan is shooting 'Scouts vs. Zombies' and Poulter recently starred in 'We're the Millers'.
