Oscar Isaac shares letter from Alec Guinness mocking Star Wars

Oscar Isaac shared a letter from Sir Alec Guinness in which he revealed he didn’t like his ‘Star Wars’ character Obi Wan Kenobi at the Letters Live event in London on Sunday (13.03.16).

The 36-year-old actor – who joined the sci-fi franchise last year as X-wing fighter pilot Poe Dameron in ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ – surprised guests when he recited lines penned by the late star that revealed Guinness had few positive things to say about his Jedi Master character or director George Lucas’ script for the original 1977 movie ‘Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope’.

During the movie’s shoot, he wrote: "Can’t say I’m enjoying the film … New rubbish dialogue reaches me every other day on wadges of pink paper, and none of it makes my character clear or even bearable."

He went on to mock Han Solo actor Harrison Ford – who recently reprised the role in ‘Episode VII’ – by calling him a "languid man" whose name he could not remember.

Recalling his other co-star Mark Hamill – who portrayed Obi Wan’s student Luke Skywalker – he went on: "Mark Hamill and Tennyson (that can’t be right) Ford. Ellison? No! Well a rangy, languid man who is probably intelligent and amusing."

Guinness died in 2000 at the age of 86 in England, where he started out as a Shakespearean actor before making the move to Hollywood.

After staring as Obi Wan Kenobi in the original film, Guinness returned to the role in sequels ‘The Empire Strikes Back’ and ‘Return of the Jedi’ and his voice also comes to Rey – played by Daisy Ridley – in a flashback scene in ‘The Force Awakens’.
