One Direction up for Worst Band prize at NME Awards

One Direction have been nominated for the Worst Band prize at the NME Awards.

The ‘Steal My Girl’ hitmakers – Niall Horan, Louis Tomilinson, Harry Styles and Liam Payne – are up for the unwanted ‘honour’ along with Sleaford Mods, U2, Nickelback and 5SOS at the magazine’s annual ceremony next year.

The boys are also dubiously up for the Music Moment of the Year due to their decision to go on hiatus.

Other incidents listed include Adele’s record-breaking return, The Libertines’ secret Glastonbury set, Foo Fighters frontman Dave Grohl breaking his leg on stage, Florence + the Machine headlining Glastonbury in Foo Fighters’ place and Kanye West’s performance at the BRIT Awards.

Elsewhere, Kanye is also nominated for both NME’s Hero and Villain titles.

Away from the unwanted prizes, The Libertines and Wolf Alice lead the way with six nominations each

Both bands will go head-to-head for some of the biggest awards of the night, including Best British Band, Best Live Band, Best Track, Best Music Video and Best Fan Community.

Mike Williams, editor-in-chief of NME, said: "The NME audience has voted in its thousands, and once again have pulled together an exciting, diverse and in some places pretty surprising shortlist for the 2016 Awards.

"Will The Libertines crown their beautiful comeback with a couple of wins? Will Kanye be the hero and villain of the year? Can anyone stop the Adele juggernaut from pulverising everything in its path?

"All will be revealed once the people have had their final say. I’m really excited and can’t wait for the big night."

The magazine’s awards first started in 1953, one year after the launch of NME and has seen the likes of The Beatles, Blondie, Noel Gallagher and The Who perform at it.

The winners will be announced at the star-studded bash on February 17, 2016 at London’s O2 Academy Brixton.
