New commemorative coin marks Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip’s 70th wedding anniversary

Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip’s 70th wedding anniversary will be honoured with a new set of commemorative coins.
The 91-year-old monarch and the Duke of Edinburgh’s long relationship has been marked with the release of gold proof, fine silver, silver proof and brilliant uncirculated coins that range in price from £5 to £20.
One side of the coin sees the British monarch and the Duke of Edinburgh’s portraits side to side whilst the other side of the coin features the words, "Wedded love has joined them in happiness 1947-2017" alongside an image of the couple riding horses together.
The design of the couple of horseback was created by artist John Bergdahl, reflecting their joint passion for all things equestrian whilst sculptor Etienne Milner made the reverse side of the coin, which shows Prince Philip in his role as royal consort.
A spokesman for the Royal Mint said: "They have built an enduring partnership that is an inspiration to us all, as Britain celebrates this unique personal moment in royal history."
It comes after Prince Charles struck a new coin dedicated to his father earlier this year, which marked Prince Philip’s retirement from public duties.
Gordon Summers, chief engraver for the Royal Mint, said at the time: "The image of the Duke of Edinburgh was taken from a prize medal from the 1970s. We are already working on a coin for Prince Charles’ 70th birthday, and I showed him the design for it. He asked what references we had used. We had a photography session with him about a year ago. We did not alter the image of his father, so his father looks younger than him on the coins. He did say ‘my father got to choose a younger portrait.’"
