‘Never Say Never Again’: Bonnie Tyler would love to record a Bond song

Bonnie Tyler would love to record a James Bond theme – but only if it’s the right song.

The ‘Total Eclipse Of The Heart’ hitmaker famously rejected an offer to record ‘Never Say Never Again’ for the 1983 spy movie of the same name starring the late Sir Sean Connery as 007, with Lani Hall, 78, taking her place.

However, the Welsh singer, 72, has no regrets because the tune didn’t turn out to be a hit.

She told Record Collector magazine: “I would absolutely love to record a James Bond theme, but I didn’t like the song for the film and I can’t sing a song I don’t believe in.

It was the only theme that never became a hit, so I think I made the right choice.”

Elsewhere, Bonnie revealed her record label thought she was “mad” to ask the late ‘Total Eclipse Of The Heart’ songwriter Jim Steinman to work with her.

She recalled: “I knew it would work with Jim Steinman, but my label thought I was mad. I said to them, ‘What’s the worst that can happen? He says no.’ They didn’t want to ask him but I pushed and in the end they did. He knew [1977’s] ‘It’s A Heartache’, which had been a hit in the States. He got me and my manager to go to New York and he sat at the piano and started playing this song and [Canadian singer, Rory Dodd started singing it and that was Total Eclipse Of The Heart. I couldn’t believe he wanted to give it to me. I enjoyed every minute of working with him.

I wouldn’t change a thing about any of it.”

Jim – who is also known for his work with late ‘Bat Out Of Hell’ hitmaker Meat Loaf – also wrote Bonnie’s other huge hit, 1984’s ‘Holding Out for a Hero’, for the soundtrack to the musical drama ‘Footloose’.
