Neighbours: Harold and Marge reunion

‘Neighbours’ legends Ian Smith and and Anne Charleston have revealed how tough it was filming their most iconic scene.
The soap stars – who played couple Harold and Madge Bishop on the Australian show – were last seen on screen together in 2003 for 30th birthday celebrations, in scenes which saw the latter appear to her husband as a vision.
It has been 27 years since Harold was washed off a cliff, and Ian admitted the filming that day didn’t go to plan at all.
Appearing on ‘Loose Women’ on Thursday (16.08.18), he said: "It wasn’t a cliff it was a rock. It was meant to be terribly rough and a wave was meant to wash me off the rock, but it was like a mill pond.
"All the crew were picking up rocks and throwing them in the sea to make it look rough."
It wasn’t the only difficult bit of filming for the pair, as Ian revealed shooting their wedding involved using the director’s hand as a stand-in for his own.
He explained: "The biggest drama was that I had rather bad hands at the time, I had psoriasis, so they couldn’t do the ring being slipped onto the finger. So the director’s came in, that wasn’t Harold’s hand at all."
The 80-year-old actor – who hinted he would return to the soap if he was asked – also reflected on what makes the set so special.
He suggested: "We’re all a bit mad, I think that helps. We’ve got crews that really make it an easy day. I’m not sure our playing up would be put up with in many other places, but it makes the show what it is."
