Natalie Imbruglia’s upcoming album Algorithm inspired by ‘most challenging time’ with her mental health

Natalie Imbruglia is gearing up for a full‑blown comeback, dropping her new album Algorithm on September 4 — and she’s promising fans a version of herself they’ve never seen before.

The Torn icon, who dominated the late ’90s and early 2000s, is stepping back into the spotlight with a record she says was born out of chaos, creativity and the toughest mental‑health battle of her life.

Imbruglia says she built the album with a tight crew of collaborators – including MyRiot, David Sneddon, Fraser T Smith, Snow Patrol’s Gary Lightbody, Anu Pillai, Tobie Tripp, Mark Crew, and Dan Priddy – who were in the trenches with her from day one.

She said: “On this record I chose to work with collaborators who also co-produce so from start to finish we were all so invested in every song.

“I really hope that people get as much joy from listening to this record as we did making it. And that they dance their arses off.”

But behind the scenes, things weren’t as glossy as the synths.

She admitted: “[Fraser] T [Smith] his was by far the most fun I’ve ever had making a record.

“It also happened to coincide with the most challenging time I’ve had with my mental health. This is the beauty of music and artistic expression. You can take something dark and turn it into light.”

The album’s lead single Upside Down, out now, is the clearest window into that struggle — a bright, shimmering pop track built on the moment she realised she couldn’t simply “power through” anymore.

She said: “The inability to control my emotions, wrestling with fight or flight mode, was awful, and I was reaching this critical point with it.

“In a way, the song is about how sheer willpower – trying to force your way out of something – doesn’t always work. You need tools, support.”

With the follow-up to 2021’s Firebird marking her first album in five years, Imbruglia is ready to take it straight to the stage.

She’s already locked in festival slots across the UK — including App‑Fest, Replay, In It Together and Lazydays — plus dates in Spain, Sweden and Mexico, with more shows expected to drop soon.
