Jake Gyllenhaal says fear is a good "motivator".
The 34-year-old star has admitted he was terrified ahead of his role as Billy 'The Great' Hope in 'Southpaw' because he didn't want to look like an "idiot" with his limited boxing knowledge.
He said: "I spent five months training for the movie and I trained twice a day. I figured I'd make five months into 10 months if I did that.
"And I was just basically scared that I'd look like an idiot, so I worked as hard as I could. Fear is sometimes a good motivating thing."
And despite his initial nerves, Jake is "very proud" of the final movie.
He added to Access Hollywood: "I'm very proud of it. I'm proud of the fact that it's a movie that seems like a boxing film, but really is a family movie about the relationship between a father and a daughter, which moves me so much.
"Everybody worked so hard on the movie. And they worked so hard making those relationships real and I think we made a beautiful movie so I'm really proud of it."
Meanwhile, the Hollywood hunk previously admitted he felt "naked" whilst filming for the action drama.
He shared: "Even when you're only filming a fight, even when it's a movie, in the ring you feel totally naked.
"It's a strange thing, 700 extras watching."

Idris Elba will appear in 'Star Trek Beyond'.
The 42-year-old star - who was rumoured to be starring as a villain in the sci-fi sequel - confirmed he will be taking up a role in the movie when he appeared alongside the entire cast, including Chris Pine, Zoe Saldana, Zachary Quinto, Simon Pegg, Karl Urban, Anton Yelchin and John Cho, for an Omaze charity video.
Idris joins the group part way through the video and is welcomed by Chris, who says, "Idris, glad you could join us."
In the past, Idris has been rumoured to be starring as Klingon but co-writer and star Simon Pegg has admitted it is unlikely he would be given that specific role.
He said: "Idris, I heard there's a rumour he's been spoken to about stuff, so he may be in the film but he won't be a Klingon."
Meanwhile, Simon also admitted that he felt under pressure to write the script for the upcoming movie.
He quipped: "It's enormous pressure, I'm barely able to speak right now I'm so terrified, but no it's good, it's going well.
"You know we're working at it hard and I'm writing with a guy [Doug Jung], he's in LA I'm here. I was there last week, writing with him, he's going to come here next week and we'll just keep plugging away at it and hopefully come up with something that the fans like, everybody likes, not just the fans."

Ewan McGregor will star in a 'Trainspotting' sequel.
The 44-year-old actor will reprise his role as heroin addict Renton almost 20 years after the original was released, having reconciled with director Danny Boyle who he was rumoured to have argued with after the filmmaker promised him the lead role in 2000 thriller 'The Beach' before giving the role to Leonardo DiCaprio.
An insider told The Sun newspaper: "Thankfully, they finally patched things up and Ewan is now very fired up about making the sequel.
"Like the first movie, he is going to be the central character and will have the most work on the project.
"So he is very invested and is offering a lot of input on the script.
"It's full steam ahead."
As well as Ewan, fellow cast members Robert Carlyle and Jonny Lee have also been confirmed for the film, which will begin shooting in Scotland in January.
Just last month, the actor revealed he "would be up for" making a sequel but insisted he hadn't seen a script.
He said: "I would be up for it. I've said that to Danny. Everybody has talked about it and speculated about it, but I don't if it's happening yet. I've not seen a script and I don't know if there is one. It's been a long, long time."
The author of the novel on which the movie is based, Irvine Welsh, also recently teased he was keen for another 'Trainspotting' film following the success of the 1996 original, but said it would have to be made "in the right circumstances".
He explained: "Myself, Danny and John Hodge. We are all really keen for it to happen, but only in the right circumstances. The circumstance has always been that nobody needs the money, so there's no point in doing in for that reason."

Joss Whedon has revealed Scarlett Johansson was "word perfect" in 'Avengers: Age Of Ultron'.
The acclaimed director has heaped praise on the Hollywood icon, who starred as Black Widow/ Natasha Romanov, and Tom Hiddleston - who played Loki - in the Marvel superhero movie that hit cinema screens earlier this year.
He said: "I'm going to have to give it up for Natasha and Loki, just for being a dream to write, and to two actors for being word perfect and riveting."
Joss has already confirmed he will not return to direct another movie in the 'Avengers' series, and he's also revealed he doesn't have any plans to create a director's cut of 'Avengers: Age Of Ultron'.
He told Collider: "It has always been my ambition never to do a director's cut of anything, and always to make the movie with the studio that we both want to make.
"'Ultron' was very complex. There was a lot of back-and-forth. My instinct is no. Just as an artist, I'm super f***ing lazy and that sounds like it would be hard. I don't think there's interest in it, right now."

Cara Delevingne wants everyone to "accept" her as an actress.
The 22-year-old model is starring in five movies this year, including 'Pan' and 'Kids In Love', but has insisted she's going to carry on modelling too.
Cara said: "I have five movies coming out this year, which is really exciting, so you don't really have a choice but to accept me as an actress now!
"I'm going to shove myself down your throat, in the nicest way possible. I'm going to carry on modelling - it's just going to happen a lot less. Actresses do modelling jobs, so it'll be kind of the same thing."
The British beauty will next be seen in 'Paper Towns' as Margo, a girl who goes missing, and Cara has revealed she wanted to play the part as soon as she read it, because she shared so many "similarities" with the character.
Speaking to Britain's OK! magazine, Cara said: "When I first read the script I was in awe of (Margo). She popped out of the page at me and we share a couple of similarities. When I first read the script there were lines that I'd actually said to people before, which scared me immensely.
"'You don't love me, you don't even know me.' I've said that a couple of times. It's that idea of people making their own ideas of you. After that I knew I had to try my hardest to get it."

Michael Douglas' teenage son acts like his agent and tells his father what films he should take on.
The 'Ant-Man' star - who has 14-year-old son Dylan and 12-year-old daughter Carys Zeta with wife Catherine Zeta-Jones - has revealed how his son takes "particular pride" in acting like his agent and informing him of how certain roles will give him "a whole new audience".
Speaking on ITV's 'Lorraine', Michael said: "Dylan, my 14 year old son, takes particular pride in acting as my agent, telling me, 'Dad you have to do this movie, Dad you don't understand, this is a whole new audience for you!'... Now he's very, very excited about [new film 'Ant-Man'] and so is his sister Carys."
Meanwhile, Michael revealed recently that he intends to "push" Catherine Zeta-Jones into a superhero film.
Asked if the Welsh beauty would be interested in playing a superhero, Michael said: "I'm sure she might. I'm gonna push her into it because in the story of Hank Pym, he's lost his wife, so maybe she can finally come back and we can finally get to work together."

J.K. Rowling and Warner Bros are looking for a young girl to star in 'Harry Potter' spin-off 'Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them' as Modesty.
The lucky actress will star alongside 'The Theory of Everything' actor, Eddie Redmayne for what is set to be one of the must-see movies of 2016.
Warner Bros has given a description of the character, which they said has the "ability to see deep into people and understand them".
They said: "Modesty is a haunted young girl with an inner strength and stillness. She has an ability to see deep into people and understand them."
Speaking about the film - based on her 2001 book of the same title - which the multi-award winning actress has written the screenplay for, J.K. Rowling previously posted to Facebook: "Although it will be set in the worldwide community of witches and wizards where I was so happy for 17 years, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them is neither a prequel nor a sequel to the Harry Potter series, but an extension of the wizarding world.
"The laws and customs of the hidden magical society will be familiar to anyone who has read the Harry Potter books or seen the films, but Newt's story will start in New York, 70 years before Harry's gets under way."
The casting call for the role, which requires a girl aged between eight and 12, will take place at London's Excel Centre on Saturday (18.07.15).
The film is set for release in November 2016.

Little Mix want to make their own 'Spice World'-inspired movie.
The 'Black Magic' hitmakers - made up of Jesy Nelson, Perrie Edwards, Leigh-Anne Pinnock and Jade Thirlwall - have confessed they'd love to follow in the footsteps of fellow UK girl-band Spice Girls, and make their own movie - and they even know what it would be about and who they'd cast.
Speaking to KISS FM, Leigh-Anne said: "We know how the sketches would look. Our tour manager actually looks like a proper action hero so we said Liam Neeson could play him and he could get kidnapped.
"We'd love cameos from Denzel Washington, Idris Elba and Cameron Diaz."
The 'Move' singers have previously said they wanted to make a movie in order to show their "sensitive side" off, as well as their humour.
Jesy said: "We want a movie really badly and a world tour. We have so much more we want to do so hopefully this will be the year."
Leigh-Anne added: "It would not just be comical, you would see our sensitive side (too).
"We wear our hearts on our sleeves, what you see is what you get, and we would love to put that into a film and show everyone the real Little Mix."

Sylvester Stallone will not fight ISIS in a new 'Rambo' movie.
The iconic actor is set to reprise his role as Vietnam War veteran John Rambo for a fifth time in the upcoming film - tentatively titled 'Rambo V: Last Blood' - although a representative for the actor has denied reports the character will battle the Islamic State in Syria after rumours the actor had announced the news at Comic-Con in San Diego.
His rep told Rolling Stone online: "Sylvester Stallone did not attend Comic-Con 2015, and consequently there was no official remark from him regarding Rambo made there at the event.
"This is not an accurate report."
In several reports, the 69-year-old actor was quoted as saying he had teams searching for filming locations in the Middle East for the movie, which will be a follow-up to 2008's 'Rambo'.
He reportedly said: "We have teams scouting Iraq and parts of Syria where ISIS have their greatest strongholds.
"We're working with the locals there to help deliver the most intense and realistic Rambo movie experience ever."
Although the quotes have been dismissed as false, the star confirmed his involvement in the film - which will reportedly see him take on the Mexican cartel - in December, when he announced he would be shooting it before crime biopic 'Scarpa'.
He tweeted: "Doing Scarpa based on Gangster Greg Scarpa after LAST BLOOD RAMBO (sic)."
