Rooney Mara is set to continue in the role of Lisbeth Salander in the 'Girl With the Dragon Tattoo' franchise.
The 39-year-old actress had been widely expected to give up the part, with Alicia Vikander stepping into the role, but it's now been reported Rooney is actually set to continue as the hacker heroine.
A source told the New York Post newspaper: "No one is officially attached to the new film except writer Steven Knight.
"For all parties [involved], Rooney is in position to continue the franchise - that is the truth."
Meanwhile, another insider said the competition for the coveted role had led to bad blood between the actresses off-screen.
The source said: "It's gotten very competitive between Rooney and Alicia, and reached a boiling point."
This comes shortly after Rooney spoke out about the gender pay gap in Hollywood, admitting she's just "grateful" she works in the film industry.
Rooney said: "I've been in films where I've found out my male co-star got paid double what I got paid, and it's just a reality of the time that we live in.
"To me, it's frustrating, but at the same time, I'm just grateful to be getting paid at all for what I do."

Kate Winslet can't believe her 'Dressmaker' co-star Liam Hemsworth is only 25.
The Oscar-winning actress stars alongside the Australian hunk in the new comedy drama film, and has admitted she struggles to comprehend the 15-year age gap between herself and her co-star.
Kate said: "Either I look good or he looks really f***ing old.
"He's ten years older than my daughter (Mia) who's doing her GCSEs, and I'm 15 years older than him.
"That's funny - he's a baby. He's very sweet, I must say."
In one scene in the movie, Kate had to take a tape measure to Liam's bare chest, and she admitted her co-star was a little anxious about the experience.
She told the Daily Mail newspaper: "He was nervous about that. Terrified, really. It's nice to see a different side of the coin in terms of a woman getting to objectify the male torso. And he is good looking."
Earlier this week, Kate admitted her daughter was "jealous" she got to work with Liam on 'The Dressmaker'.
She said: "Liam is a lovely, lovely guy, much is made of how he looks and he's physically extremely beautiful but he's a fabulous chap and was really up for mucking in with the rest of us ... but my daughter Mia was extremely jealous, along with all of her friends."

The 'Fifty Shades of Grey' sequels have finally gotten a director and will be shot back-to-back.
'House of Cards' James Foley will take over directing duties from Sam Taylor-Johnson, who decided not to return for the sequels and the movies - which are currently in pre-production - will be filmed together next year, according to The Wrap.
Jamie Dornan and Dakota Johnson will return to the franchise as bondage-loving billionaire Christian Grey and his naive lover Anastasia Steele.
Michael De Luca and Dana Brunetti will once again produce alongside author E.L. James, while her husband Niall Leonard has written both scripts, based on her best-selling novels.
Foley's directing credits include 1992's 'Glengarry Glen Rose', starring Al Pacino and Alec Baldwin, the 1996 thriller 'Fear' starring Mark Wahlberg and Reese Witherspoon and 2007's psychological thriller 'Perfect Stranger' with Halle Berry.
Speaking about leaving the franchise, Sam previously told BANG Showbiz: "I'm flattered they wanted me to continue. But it was a monumental job - that was enough for me. I couldn't really have ever expected that after working in a small, dark room for almost a year editing. I wish them all the luck in the world."
'Fifty Shades Darker' is scheduled for release on February 10, 2017 with the finale 'Fifty Shades Freed' due out on February 9, 2018.

Antonio Banderas feels like he's "survived" the last 24 years in Hollywood.
The 55-year-old actor has taken on the role of Chilean miner Mario Sepúlveda in 'The 33', about the mining accident in 2010, and Antonio has joked he's been forced to adapt survival techniques to make it through his film career.
He said: "Have I been in danger like that in my life? I've been living in Hollywood for 24 years, and I've survived it. So, yes, I know about that."
Antonio will portray the struggles the miners endured when they were stuck underground for 69 days and the filming experience made him reflect on his own life.
He told Azcentral: "Sometimes we take life for granted, and only when you have to face death, right in front of you, will you appreciate the essentials."
"And what is that thing that is essential, that is really important for me? It's not money, it's not a new car, it's not a fashionable house or a yacht or anything like that.
"It's just a hug from my sister or my mother, the eyes of my daughter. We forget that, and the movie becomes a reminder of those things."

Ryan Reynolds is "perfectly suited" to the part of Deadpool.
The 38-year-old actor plays Marvel's titular anti-hero in the eagerly-awaited new movie and producer Simon Kinberg can't imagine anyone else in the role.
He told Collider: "I've worked on a lot of movies, comic book any otherwise, and I don't know that I've ever seen an actor as perfectly suited to a part as Ryan is to Deadpool. It's just something that comes so naturally to him. It's one of the reasons why he creates so many of those viral pieces, because I think he has so much fun being Deadpool that he's Deadpool on and off set."
And everyone is so happy with how the movie is progressing that there is already talk of a sequel, before it has even been finished.
Simon added: It's certainly the hope, and there is conversation about what the idea would be and perhaps which characters we would bring in to a sequel. The writers, Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, were a really integral part of the process. Our focus, like all of us, is on finishing the film, so I think as soon as we finish the film we'll be talking seriously about the sequel and then we'll wait a couple months and see how the movie does. Hopefully the movie will do great and we can keep making these movies, because I do think there's a lot more story to tell. I'm assuming it'll come out somewhere whether it's on the internet or the DVD eventually, but on every single take there's like an embarrassment of riches of alternate takes, whether it's Ryan or T.J. Miller, pretty much any character in the movie just goofing around and coming up with other lines, ideas, abs. It'd be fun to keep making these movies because it doesn't feel like we'll run out of juice."

Jennifer Lawrence pulled out of 'The Rosie Project' because negotiations went on too long.
The 'Hunger Games' actress agreed to take a pay cut to appear in Sony Pictures' adaptation of Graeme Simison novel but dropped out after chairman Tom Rothman failed to agree terms.
A source told The Hollywood Reporter: "Rothman was doing a lot of grinding on 'The Rosie Project', and it took its toll. If it had been done more quickly, it wouldn't have fallen apart.
"The bottom line was she had too much time to think about it."
And while director Richard Linklater's contract was agreed quickly, once Jennifer left the movie he followed her.
The 'Boyhood' helmer only agreed to take on the picture after Jennifer convinced him so once she was no longer involved, he also dropped out.
Produced by Matt Tolmach and Michael Costigan, 'The Rosie Project' will focus on a genetics professor with limited social skills who thinks he has conjured a scientific survey to find a perfect mate, but, instead, finds Rosie, a mismatched woman who becomes irresistible to him
Phil Lord and Christopher Miller's originally quit the movie to direct the Han Solo 'Star Wars' spin-off.

J.J. Abrams has praised Carrie Fisher's performance in 'Star Wars: The Force Awakens' as "crazy brilliant".
The 49-year-old filmmaker has confessed that although he was initially hesitant about casting the 'Star Wars' veteran in the upcoming next instalment in the franchise, he was blown away by her talent.
Abrams said: "She is crazy brilliant ... It's an amazing thing, her sort of free-associative mind, her ability to find humour in anything - she's like a divining rod for wordplay. She's incredible."
Explaining why he'd been unsure about having her reprise her role as Princess Leia, he continued: "She'd been writing more than she had been acting. So I think that for her, it was a bigger adjustment, which she made beautifully."
However, the 'Star Trek Into Darkness' director explained that Fisher's character is no longer referred to as a Princess.
He told Entertainment Weekly: "She's referred to as General. But... there's a moment in the movie where a character sort of slips and calls her 'Princess'."
Meanwhile, Fisher, 59, joked about reuniting with Han Solo actor Harrison Ford, 73, for the film.
She said: "I think we're pretty sick of each other by now, so we pretend to be interested in each other between takes. And we fail. I'm mostly interested in how [Ford] stays in such good shape. I can talk to him about that for a long time."
'Star Wars: The Force Awakens' is set for release worldwide on December 18.

'Alien: Paradise Lost' will be followed by another sequel.
Ridley Scott - who is returning to the iconic sci-fi franchise for the new movie - has revealed 'Prometheus 2' will start filming in the new year, and is set to answer some long-held questions about the series.
He told IGN: "'Prometheus 2' will start getting shot in February and I've already begun now so I know what the script is.
"Then there will be another one after that and then maybe we'll back into 'Alien 1', as to why? Who would make such a dreadful thing?"
Meanwhile, Ridley recently admitted the new movie has been called 'Alien: Paradise Lost' because it sounds "intellectual".
He said: "It's going to be 'Alien: Paradise Lost', so 'Prometheus 2' is not really going to be [what it's called].
"It's a book, 'Paradise Lost' ... it sounds intellectual, there's a similarity to it, but that's where it stops."
Ridley also explained how the new movie will fit into the context of the franchise.
He said: "We'll go back to how, why and when the beast was invented. We'll go into the backdoor of the first 'Alien' I did 30 years ago."
