Moody Blues star John Lodge dies ‘unexpectedly’ aged 82

Moody Blues star John Lodge has died aged 82.

The legendary musician’s family said he passed away “suddenly and unexpectedly,” and revealed that his final moments were movingly soundtracked by the music of The Everly Brothers and Buddy Holly.

A statement read: “It is with the deepest sadness that we have to announce that John Lodge, our darling husband, father, grandfather, father-in-law and brother, has been suddenly and unexpectedly taken from us.

“As anyone who knew this massive-hearted man knows, it was his enduring love of his wife, Kirsten, and his family, that was the most important thing to him, followed by his passion for music, and his faith. John peacefully slipped away surrounded by his loved ones and the sounds of The Everly Brothers and Buddy Holly.

“We are heartbroken, but will walk forwards into peace surrounded by the love he had for each of us. As John would always say at the end of the show, thank you for keeping the faith.”

Lodge joined The Moody Blues in 1966, becoming a pivotal creative force behind the band’s most iconic albums, including Days of Future Passed, In Search of the Lost Chord, and Seventh Sojourn.

He also had a solo career with his most recent album being 2015’s 10,000 Light Years Ago – the follow-up to 1977 debut Natural Avenue.

Beyond the studio, Lodge remained a devoted performer, touring well into his 70s and sharing the stage with his son-in-law Jon Davison of Yes.

As well as being inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame with the iconic rock band – in which he played bass guitarist and was co-lead vocalist – in 2018, Lodge received an Ivor Novello Award for his Outstanding Contribution to Music in 1985.

And, in 2019, he was honoured with a Lifetime Achievement Award at the Prog Awards.

He is survived by his wife, Kristen, and children, Emily and Kristian.
