Michaela Strachan feels ‘perky’ following double mastectomy

Michaela Strachan is feeling "perky" after her breast reconstruction procedure following a double mastectomy to treat her breast cancer.

The ‘Springwatch’ presenter revealed that she is "feeling great" after having the surgery to reconstruct her breasts, after having a mastectomy to remove the cancerous cells.

Michaela announced her decision to have the life-saving surgery in an article in You magazine, but talking on ITV’s ‘Lorraine’ this morning (07.10.14), she revealed that she is feeling better.

She told the show: "I’m feeling great. I wrote that article for You magazine myself six weeks ago and since then I have had reconstruction so I am feeling ‘perky’."

The 48-year-old television presenter did admit that she had been worried after receiving her diagnosis because she thought that the cancer might have spread to her back.

She told Lorraine: "I had terrible back pain from doing [the reality show] ‘Splash’ and I thought maybe that’s not just ‘Splash’ maybe I’ve got secondary cancer and maybe I’m not going to make it – all those thoughts go through your head and it is a very frightening time."

However, once she was given the option to have the mastectomy, Michaela revealed that she took a no-nonsense approach.

She shared: "I was terribly pragmatic about it. Once I got over the shock then it was practical, ‘OK, when can we fit it in?’"

Michaela also praised her "brave" partner Nick Chevallier – who tragically lost his first wife to colon cancer – for his support, before adding: "I am so blessed that they found it early."
