Michael Caine: Affleck will be great as Batman

Sir Michael Caine thinks Ben Affleck will do "very well" playing Batman.

The 81-year-old actor – who portrayed butler Alfred Pennyworth opposite Christian Bale in Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight trilogy – is sure Affleck will do The Caped Crusader character proud in new movie ‘Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice’.

When asked how he thought Affleck would do in the superhero role, Caine said: "I think he’s going to do very well because it’s a different outlook and he’s a very good actor, Ben Affleck is a wonderful actor."

Caine is so sure the ‘Man of Steel’ sequel will be great he’s going to go to the cinema to watch it.

He added to BANG Showbiz: "I think it will be a really interesting film, I’ll definitely go and watch it."

The movie icon is very proud of his work in his three Batman films because they introduced him to a whole new generation of fans.

He said: "There’s a whole generation of kids who know who I am because of Batman. I’ve gone from Alfie to Alfred. I’ve got new fans."

Caine was speaking before he appeared at The Royal Albert Hall in London on Wednesday night (01.10.14) for ‘A Night Out With… Sir Michael Caine’, a retrospective of his career hosted by Jonathan Ross to raise money for the NSPCC charity.

During the Q&A, the movie legend revealed Nolan personally delivered the script for ‘Batman Begins’ to his house and wouldn’t leave until he read his part as Alfred.

The actor recalled: "It’s amazing when you’re an actor, things happen. One Sunday morning there’s a knock at the door, and there’s a guy standing there who I’ve never met and I don’t recognise and he’s holding a script and he says, ‘I’ve got a script for you.’ So I said, ‘OK, thank you very much.’ He goes, ‘Can I come in and talk to you.’ I thought he was just delivering it, but I suddenly got a feeling this guy was quite important. So he comes in and introduces himself and he’s got the script for the first Batman. ‘I want you to play the butler,’ he tells me. I said, ‘So what do I say? Dinner is served? Would you like a beverage with that?’ He says, ‘No it’s better than that Michael.’

"He’s a very secretive director. So I said, ‘OK leave it with me, and I’ll get my driver to send it back to you tomorrow.’ He said, ‘No, I want you to read it now. I’ll wait and you tell me if you like it.’ And of course it was an incredible part, of Alfred the butler. He wasn’t just a butler he was Batman’s foster father. And so began a thing with Christopher."
