Michael Bay excited by Transformers cars

Michael Bay says the great cars he got to use in ‘Transformers: Age of Extinction’ was the "coolest" thing about making the movie.

The 49-year-old director has worked on all four films in the robot franchise, and the petrol head always got excited when a new vehicle would be delivered to the set

He explained: "One of the coolest things about doing the ‘Transformers’ movies is car companies see the value in having their new cars in the film.

"So, they’d literally fly their new cars from car shows in Europe or wherever to my office. Bugatti, Mercedes, Chevy, Lamborghini. They all wanted to be part of this franchise."

Despite receiving the sought-after automobiles, the filmmaker admitted he did consider leaving the franchise after 2011’s ‘Transformers: Dark of the Moon’, when Shia LaBeouf revealed he would not be returning for another movie. However, the movie maker was tempted back when ‘Ted’ star Mark Wahlberg – who he worked with on the 2013 crime comedy ‘Pain & Gain’ – expressed an interest in the film.

When questioned on whether he contemplated quitting, he said: "I did think about it, but I came to the conclusion I didn’t want to hand it off to somebody else.

"The franchise has a big, loyal audience all around the world. We started working on the script and I worked with Mark on ‘Pain & Gain’ and it was great fun. When Mark showed interest in doing a Transformers film it got me."

The acclaimed director – who previously worked on ‘Armageddon’ and ‘Pearl Harbor’ – also confessed the studio was not sure about the 43-year-old star featuring in the film, as they thought a younger protagonist may be more suitable.

He said: "Yes there was [talks of using a younger actor]. The studio suggested that, but I liked the father-daughter story and my experience with Mark on ‘Pain & Gain’ was so good it seemed like a natural fit."

‘Transformers: Age of Extinction’ is out on DVD, Blu-ray and Digital Download now
