Matt Smith wants female Time Lord in Doctor Who

Matt Smith wants a female Time Lord in ‘Doctor Who’.
The 33-year-old actor – who portrayed the fictional extraterrestrial legend for four years from 2010 – believes a lady could soon take over the reins as the iconic figure in the popular sci-fi series.
Speaking in a live webchat with the Guardian website, he told a fan who claimed her daughter wanted to be the new Time Lord: "I think a Lady Doctor could be close. And would be fun. Practise, practise, practise. And talk really fast. And think really fast. And be really brave. And mad. And silly. And good luck maybe it will be you!"
Matt recently sparked rumours he was hoping to reprise his role in the BBC show after he revealed he missed playing the time-travelling alien.
But he’s adamant he’d never go back to the programme and thinks the Peter Capaldi – who portrays the twelfth incarnation of the Doctor – is doing a fantastic job and he thoroughly enjoys watching him on-screen.
He explained: "No it’s not true. I miss everything. I miss Steven [Moffat], I miss Karen [Gillan], I miss Arthur [Darvill] and I miss Jenna [Coleman]. I miss time travelling and I miss my friends in Cardiff [where it’s shot].
"But onward goes the march. It’s Peter’s Tardis now. And I love what he does, so I watch [the show] as a fan."
Meanwhile, screenwriter Steven Moffat previously revealed he’d offered the role of the Doctor to a black actor before Peter took it on in 2014.
He said at the time: "Two non-white leads would be amazing. In fact, a lot of people would barely notice. I certainly don’t think there’s ever been a problem with making the Doctor black, which is why it should happen one day.
"Sometimes the nature of a particular show – historical dramas, for instance – makes diversity more of a challenge, but ‘Doctor Who’ has absolutely nowhere to hide on this."
Moffat – who began working on ‘Doctor Who’ in 1999 – is due to retire from the show at the end of 2017 and is set to hand over the reins to ‘Broadchurch’ director Chris Chibnall, but he hopes the new producer will encourage a more diverse cast when he takes over from him.
