Mads Mikkelsen is ‘on vacation’ and free for new roles

Mads Mikkelsen is "on vacation" after he wrapped up shooting ‘Rogue One: A Star Wars Story’.
The 50-year-old star – who is known for playing Dr. Hannibal Lecter in the American psychological thriller television series ‘Hannibal’ – revealed he is open to offers after the science-fiction spin off movie and his other latest tentpole, Marvel’s ‘Doctor Strange’ wrapped earlier this year.
Speaking about the possibility of starring in a Danish film next, he said: "I’m not (working). I just wrapped up two films that I shot in London, ‘Star Wars: Rogue One’ and another modern film ‘Doctor Strange’ so it has been a big year for me, it has been fun. Maybe my next film will be Danish, but right now I’m just having a vacation and will see what happens. It’s a little like apples and oranges, you have to mix it up up sometimes, and I’m really lucky people offer me things from different places."
Mikkelsen is at Cannes Film Festival to act as jury for the highest prize awarded to filmmakers, the prestigious Palme d’Or, and empathises with the nominees, which this year includes ‘Loving’ from director Jeff Nichols, Andrea Arnold’s ‘American Honey’, Ken Loach’s ‘I, Daniel Blake’, ‘The Handmaiden’ from ‘Oldboy’ filmmaker Park Chan-wook, and Nicole Garcia’s ‘From the Land of the Moon’ starring Marion Cotillard.
He said: "People who are in the competition, it is a fragile situation for everyone. Everybody is so anxious to know what they think about their film and it’s an immediate response, people will clap or they will not, or they will even boo sometimes!"
And Mads insists he will follow his "heart" when he makes the difficult choice.
He told Deadline: "It’s a cliché to say but it’s very hard to compare films. It’s like two people who are running, one is faster than the other, end of story, but you can’t do that with films. We will listen with our hearts and our minds and at the end of the day we have to make a choice and hopefully we will agree."
