Madonna’s daughter thought it would be “easier” for them to record a song together than discuss the tensions between them.
The 68-year-old singer teamed up with Lourdes Leon, who is known as Lola, for The Test, a track on her latest album Confessions on a Dance Floor: Part II, and the 29-year-old star explained the musical moment was her idea because she and her mom have always “connected” through art.
Speaking to Bob the Drag Queen for an interview recorded in June and broadcast on iHeartRadio LIVE on Thursday (24.09.26), Lourdes said: “It was my idea. I think that between a mother and a daughter in a relationship … there’s a lot of things that are unspoken.
“There’s a lot of love that is unspoken, but also a lot of tension and emotions that are difficult to put into words.
“A way that I thought would be easier for us to speak about these things would be maybe through art, which is always something that my mom and I have connected over.”
The Vogue singer admitted it was a “very emotional” writing process but recording the track was “magical”.
She said: “There were moments in the writing process when we were in the studio I felt like crying, where I felt like hugging her.”
Lourdes admitted: “I cried!”
Madonna continued: “Because, as she says … we don’t always agree on things, but we love creativity, and art has always connected us. It was a very magical moment, and we both had to be vulnerable.”
Ultimately, the collaboration was a “duh” moment for them both.
Asked if she had to “build up the courage” to approach her mum about the song, Lourdes insisted it was an “easy” question and added: “Maybe this is gonna sound stupid, but she’s a very intimidating person, and I have found that I’m not intimidated by many people as a result of her being my mom.”
Madonna agreed: “[It was] kind of a no-brainer.”
Madonna previously admitted working on The Test with Lourdes had been a “healing” moment for them both.
Speaking to Interview magazine, she said: “It’s hard for me to write a song about nothing. I have to tell a story. So I wrote about a lot of family trauma, and then we started making dance music. …
“So many very important things have happened to me along the way. For instance, the song I wrote with my daughter, Lola. She approached me about writing a song together as a way to heal our relationship. It was a really important moment, and it solidified the idea that now is the time to make this record.”
