Lorde’s Green Light inspired by ‘big jangly’ hand movement

Lorde’s ‘Green Light’ was inspired by the "big jangly" hand movements of Florence + The Machine’s keyboard player.
The 20-year-old singer has revealed the unusual influence for the second single from her forthcoming LP ‘Melodrama’ was musician Isabella Summers’ hand action on the piano rather than the ‘You’ve Got the Love’ hitmakers music after she save them perform live.
Speaking on the ‘Rookie’ podcast, she said: "We had gone to a concert to see Florence + The Machine and neither of us heard the song, I couldn’t tell you what it was, but her player [Isabella] did this big jangly movement with her hands on the piano and it was literally the physicality of that movement that became the way Jack played that … it definitely didn’t come from anything musical. It was just her hands banging down, so this is what he’s talking about."
The ‘Royals’ hitmaker says her defence when people say she’s gone pop is that the track was "born" from something physical rather than a sound.
She added: "That is exactly how that song was born. It truly had no other form.
"So when people say … for any argument, ‘Oh she went pop’ or whatever. That is just the inside of my brain. That is how a song like that enters the world and that is how it goes out into the universe."
The brunette beauty also revealed that she colour coded her album to highlight all of the bits that were "dark".
She explained: "I am a visual person and I feel like I often need to kind of see something outside of that.
"So at one point I covered my kitchen table in New Zealand with … I printed out everything I had for the album.
"This was like maybe a year ago or slightly less, but I printed everything out and I printed out all these bits that I thought were cool and lines that I thought were cool and I color coded everything in terms of all of the sad moments of the record.
"I coloured out the whole thing and it was covering the table for a long time and anytime we’d have people over I would have to throw a big towel over it or be like don’t look at the table my whole life is there, you might see yourself there, stay away for your own good, which was hilarious."
‘Melodrama’ is slated for release on June 16.
