Lesley Manville hopes Harlots returns

Lesley Manville is hoping ‘Harlots’ will return for another series.

The period drama streamed on Hulu for three years after premiering in 2017, but was cancelled last year and has now been picked up by BBC Two.

Asked whether she’d be interested in a fourth season, the 64-year-old actress told RadioTimes.com: "Yes! I hadn’t thought of that, I hadn’t thought of that at all. We finished season three and I think we all thought that was it. You know, there might be [a series renewal]! Let’s start writing the letters now.

"I’d always be interested – obviously I’d be interested, I had nothing but a pleasurable time doing all three series, and it was one of those blissful jobs, so I’d definitely [give] that a lot of consideration but it’s certainly not something that’s been talked about. Maybe you could start a campaign."

It was announced earlier this month that the BBC had secured the rights to the witty drama.

Meanwhile, Lesley has claimed that the series was "ahead of the game" with its representation of female empowerment.

The award-winning actress – whose previous credits include ‘Vera Drake’ and ‘Mr. Turner’ – said: "I actually think ‘Harlots’ was really ahead of the game.

"For all three series we had female producers, female directors exclusively, and because of the – it’s an eight episode series [so] for each series we would have three different directors. Always women directors, [a] predominantly female cast as you know."
