Leonardo DiCaprio ‘to produce Captain Planet film’

Leonardo DiCaprio is to produce the ‘Captain Planet’ movie.
The ‘Revenant’ star – who has a self-titled foundation which aims to protect the world and endangered species – is in talks for the rights to the 1990s cartoon series through his production company, Appian Way Productions.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, DiCaprio is keen to add Glen Powell and his writing partner Jono Matt to the project to pen the script.
Powell is also an actor, starring in the likes of TV series ‘Scream Queens’, so could feature on the other side of the camera as well as behind the scenes, but it is not known if this is being considered.
Should a deal go through DiCaprio and Jennifer Davisson Killoran will produce the motion picture.
The ‘Captain Planet and the Planeteers’ TV show aired from September 1990 to December 1992 and told the story of five youths from across the globe who were sent magic rings, four with the power to control an element of nature and one controlling heart.
They were known as the Planeteers and sought to defend the earth from disasters and to educate mankind about the earth.
Captain Planet would appear on each episode to remind viewers that "the Planet is yours".
The movie could be an ideal fit for environmentalist DiCaprio who, through his foundation – which he set up in 1998 – has pledged millions to environmental groups over the years.
He once said: "The destruction of our planet continues at a pace we can no longer afford to ignore.
"We have a responsibility to innovate a future where the habitability of our planet does not come at the expense of those who inhabit it. I am proud to support these organisations who are working to solve humankind’s greatest challenge."
