Lena Dunham to adapt Catherine, Called Birdy into film

Lena Dunham is planning to make the novel ‘Catherine, Called Birdy’ into a movie.

The ‘Girls’ star and creator has revealed she is working on a film adaptation of Karen Cushman’s 1994 children’s book, and is even thinking about taking on the helm herself.

She said: "I’m going to adapt it and hopefully direct it.

"I just need to find someone who wants to fund a PG-13 Medieval movie."

The historical novel – which is set in thirteenth century England and follows a diary format – tells the story of Catherine, the daughter of a moderately well-off baron in the years 1290 and 1291 when she is thirteen and fourteen years old.

And despite having little knowledge of the historical period, Dunham claims she’s been interested in the book since she was just a young girl herself.

She explained: She [Catherine] gets her period and her father basically says, ‘Well, it’s time for you to get married’, and she’s like, ‘Uh, no’.

"But it’s hyper realistic and really pretty and it’s full of incest and beatings, but it’s a child’s story. I’ve been obsessed with it since I was a kid."

Dunham will develop the film with her production partner and ‘Girls’ executive producer Jenni Konner.

According to Variety, the 28-year-old actress said: "I’m very excited about it. I’m not sure when it’ll happen, but I’m in the process [of working on it]."
