Kym Marsh: It wouldn’t make sense for Corrie cast to ‘glam up’ before work

Kym Marsh has insisted it "wouldn’t make sense" for ‘Coronation Street’ stars to dress up to go to work – after Sherrie Hewson claimed the current cast don’t make the same effort on set as her own generation.

The 44-year-old actress – who left the ITV soap last year after 13 years on the show – admitted many of the ‘Corrie’ actors turn up to the set in "comfy clothes", but she doesn’t see the point of being "glammed up" because the stars often have to go through hair, make-up and wardrobe early in the morning.

She said: "Nowadays, a lot of the actors turn up in comfy clothes.

"I agree. Things have changed, but I think the stars of the soaps have changed with the times.

"We are often expected on set at 7am and have to go through hair, make-up and wardrobe.

"It wouldn’t make sense for us to be glammed up because we’d have to get that all stripped off."

Kym also pointed out there are more ‘Corrie’ episodes nowadays than there used to be, and the cast "don’t get the luxury of rehearsals".

Writing in her OK! magazine column, she added: "Shows like ‘Coronation Street’ also have more episodes now than they used to, which means we don’t get the luxury of rehearsals and days on set can be 12 hours."

Kym’s comments come after Sherrie – who played Maureen Webster on the ITV soap from 1993 to 1997 – said the actors used to have a "tradition of glamour" when it came to dressing up for work, and she suggested there are different standards held today.

She said: "There used to be a tradition of glamour. People used to dress up to come to work. I think maybe it is a generational thing.

"Bill Roache was always smart. He always wore a suit. Barbara Knox was the queen of the street and she still is. Everything immaculate, you know – the clothes, the hair…

"I always took that from her. Like, ‘You should always look fabulous when you come to work. Not sloppy.’ "

But Sherrie also admitted there is a "different" culture on the cobbles now, with a much more relaxed dress code for those on set.

She added: "It is different. Everybody has got running clothes on as they are just about to go for a run before they go to work. I loved the glamour."
