Spain’s King Juan Carlos and Queen Sofia are likely to keep their titles when they give up the throne.
The 76-year-old monarch will step down this week to allow his son Prince Felipe to rule the country with his wife Princess Letizia, and amendments suggested by the Council of Ministers to the decree which governs the titles of the royal family are likely to allow the departing rulers to retain their title of king and queen.
The new official text for the decree will be written today (16.06.14) in a meeting headed by Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy and attended by the Council of Ministers.
The text will then be presented to congress who will vote on the outcome on 26 June.
Meanwhile, it has been reported that Juan Carlos and Sofia will not attend the proclamation declaring their son as king on Thursday (19.06.14).
Felipe, his wife Letizia and their daughters Leonor, eight, and Sofia, seven, will be at the ceremony at Madrid’s Congress of Deputies, before touring the city and greeting members of the public.
They will then head to the royal palace for a reception, though it is believed to be a low-key affair, with no foreign royals invited to the ceremony due to its late notice.
