Kevin Whately and Laurence Fox return for ninth series of Lewis

Kevin Whately and Laurence Fox are to return for a ninth series of ‘Lewis’.

The 64-year-old actor and his 36-year-old co-star are set to reprise their roles as detectives Robbie Lewis and James Hathaway respectively following ITV’s decision to recommission the popular crime drama for another series.

ITV’s director of drama Steve November commented: "We are delighted that Kevin and Laurence are returning for a ninth series of Lewis. Each story is complex and intriguing and Detectives Robbie Lewis and James Hathaway are a formidable partnership much loved by ITV viewers. I am also pleased to welcome back Angela Griffin as DS Lizzie Maddox."

The ninth series will also see the arrival of a new Chief Superintendent who is to clash with Lewis over his traditional approach to policing.

Meanwhile, after years of avoiding the thorny issue of family ties Hathaway will be forced to confront his past, while forensic pathologist Laura Hobson (Clare Holman) will be seen contemplating early retirement as their new boss piles on the pressure.

The series will continue to be produced by executive producer Michele Buck, who added: "I am thrilled to be making a ninth series of ‘Lewis’, one of ITV’s best-loved drama’s. Against the beautiful backdrop of Oxford, Lewis and Hathaway will once again investigate the city’s darkest crimes."

The new series of ‘Lewis’ – which will have viewers questioning whether the detective will finally call time on his career – is set to go into production next month.
