Josh Lawson: It took me seven years to make A Funny Kind of Love

Josh Lawson was determined to make ‘A Funny Kind of Love ‘ despite its "darker" subject matter.

The 33-year-old Australian actor – who wrote and stars in the erotic romantic film – has admitted its central themes discouraged film studios from backing his project.

Speaking exclusively to BANG Showbiz, Josh shared: "It took seven years to get the money to make the film because funding bodies were uncomfortable with the subject matter.

"But I refused to give in to changing the content because I truly believed that it was worth telling. And I honestly believed that it was not offensive in any way."

Josh said the film explores love in a more realistic way than the majority of Hollywood movies, which paint a very sanitised picture of romance.

He said: "The film has so much love and warmth in it, it allows you to go to some of the darker places without going over the line to meanness."

The filmmaker said he was determined to push the boundaries with the movie.

Josh shared: "I think it’s important for any filmmaker to do content that has not been done before. So, did I find it uncomfortable doing certain things? No, not uncomfortable.

"I just knew I had to treat it very, very carefully in order to make it accessible to audiences."

‘A Funny Kind of Love’ is in UK cinemas from May 8.
