John Legend wasn’t ’emotionally prepared’ for Chrissy Teigen’s postpartum depression

John Legend wasn’t "emotionally prepared" for Chrissy Teigen’s postpartum depression.
The ‘Love Me Now’ hitmaker and the ‘Sports Illustrated’ model welcomed their daughter Luna into the world 11 months ago but Chrissy went through a very "dark time" following the birth, something which John "didn’t see coming".
He said: "You don’t see it coming. You’re not emotionally prepared for someone that’s going through a dark time as you’re welcoming this new life. When you don’t understand what’s happening, it’s a bit challenging to figure it out and you don’t know if it’s something you’ve done or some other reason why she’s not feeling well.
"Once you understand what the reasons are then it makes perfect sense and you can adjust accordingly. It’s a chemical thing that happens to a lot of people after giving birth and there are ways to treat it and deal with it. So many people go through this – they say one in nine but there’s probably more than that. I think it was good for her to talk about it."
And the 38-year-old singer says the experience hasn’t stopped the couple from wanting to add to their family in the future.
He added to The Sun newspaper: "She was already doing better when she was writing the piece. She was coming out of it and was able to see it more clearly with some perspective and I think it was helpful for her to be on her way out of it as she was writing. We want three or four children. We’re still excited to have more kids and we’re going to do it."
Chrissy bravely opened up about her feelings of depression and anxiety, which left her unable to muster up the energy to leave the house.
She wrote at the time: "When I wasn’t in the studio, I never left the house. I mean, never. Not even a tiptoe outside. I’d ask people who came inside why they were wet. Was it raining? How would I know – I had every shade closed.
"Most days were spent on the exact same spot on the couch and rarely would I muster up the energy to make it upstairs for bed. John would sleep on the couch with me, sometimes four nights in a row. I started keeping robes and comfy clothes in the pantry so I wouldn’t have to go upstairs when John went to work. There was a lot of spontaneous crying."
