John Cleese "didn’t really want to" marry his third wife Alyce Eichelberger.
The 75-year-old actor wed the American psychotherapist in 1992 but following a turbulent separation and £12 million divorce settlement, the star has admitted the relationship was a mistake which he was pressured into.
He admitted: "It’s finally finished. Now I can start my life again. I can go off on holiday for the new year and draw a line under it.
"Life is full of ups and downs, of course, but there are only a couple of things I regret. I did rather cave in and agree to marry Alyce when I didn’t really want to. And that cost me a fortune. It cost me the best part of 10 years of my life too. I do regret the time spent over the last 10 years just earning money to hand over to someone else. Now it has come to an end."
The ‘Monty Python’s Flying Circus’ star has since married his fourth wife, jewellery designer and former model, Jennifer Wade – who aged 43, is 32 years his junior – who he says is definitely the right person for him.
He gushed: "I’ve finally got it right.
"I’m so lucky to have found love at this stage in my life. It’s infinitely better than winning an Oscar or anything like that, or making £10 million, because that’s where happiness really lies."
Despite having three failed marriages, John still believes tying the knot is an important move, which he is glad to have taken with his new lover.
Speaking to the Sunday Mirror newspaper, he added: "Marriage is absolutely something I would recommend. I think to get a proper, loving relationship at this stage in my life is the biggest bonus I could have got.
"Now I can earn a bit of money for this wife. And maybe at some point for myself too!"
