Jessica Chastain: I have felt like a sex object on set

Jessica Chastain "sometimes" feels like a "sexual object" when she’s the only woman on a film set.
The 39-year-old star has been outspoken on the problems with gender inequality in Hollywood, especially when it comes to the differences in pay between men and women.
Chastain claims she has felt uncomfortable working as an actress on occasions when she has been the only woman shooting.
Discussing the problems with gender equality in the new issue of PORTER magazine, she said: "When you have both genders represented, then you have a healthier point of view … you don’t feel a hierarchy; you don’t have anyone feeling like they are being left out or bullied or humiliated. Sometimes, being the only girl on a set, you can feel like a sexual object."
Although she accepts her profession isn’t perfect, ‘The Huntsman: Winter’s War’ star knew she wanted to act from childhood.
Whereas many girls dream about what their wedding dress will look like, Chastain always fantasised about her she would wear on the red carpet when she attended the Academy Awards.
She shared: "I just knew that (acting) was what I was going to do. It wasn’t like that’s what I’m going to do when I’m older, it was like, that’s what I am.
"I never dreamed what my wedding dress would look like … but I always dreamed about my Oscars dress."
And Chastain never got into acting to become famous, only for her love of the art form.
The red-haired actress – who is in a relationship with Count Gian Luca Passi di Preposulo, an Italian-born executive for French fashion brand Moncler – said: "I’ve never dated anyone famous. I had time before this happened to really watch the industry … I want to be able to have my family and have this normalcy and go see a play and not have the audience watching me watch the play."
To see the full interview with Jessica Chastain buy the latest issue of PORTER, on sale April 1, available in both print and digital editions.
