James Sutton: Hollyoaks is at the cutting edge of drama

James Sutton thinks ‘Hollyoaks’ is at the "cutting edge" of TV drama.
The 37-year-old actor – who plays John Paul McQueen on the show – has praised the Channel 4 soap for its "flash forward" storyline, which sees the show jump a year into the future to reveal a mysterious body bag at a crime scene.
James told Digital Spy: "The whole flash forward storyline is an incredible thing to undertake. It’s a huge thing to do – flash forward a whole year and then tell the story that leads up to that.
"It’s very brave but the sort of thing that ‘Hollyoaks’ does really well. It’s why ‘Hollyoaks’ is such an important show and at the cutting edge of continuing drama."
Producers have been tight-lipped about the storyline.
However, James believes he knows more about the mystery than other cast members.
He tipped: "Bryan Kirkwood and his team aren’t afraid to tell these kind of storylines and do things like this. We’re all really excited to be part of it.
"I hope the audience can come to terms with who’s in the body bag! New Year’s is going to be a hell of an episode this year."
Meanwhile, James recently admitted he would relish the chance to take on a different role, having previously missed out on "bad guy" parts.
Asked which character he’d like to play for a day, he said: "I’d probably play Warren Fox, or just one of the villains, one of the bad guys.
"I haven’t played a bad guy, and John Paul hasn’t had a dark side to him … yet!
"Maybe he will in the future, but all actors like playing bad characters because it’s just delicious. You can get away with all kinds of things if you’re playing a villain."
