James Corden is "overwhelmed" to have been honoured with an OBE in Queen Elizabeth’s New Year’s Honours list.
The comic actor has been awarded the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire for his services to drama and the ‘Gavin & Stacey’ star is in shock to have been selected for the honour by the monarch.
Speaking after the recipients were confirmed, he said: "(I am) thrilled, overwhelmed and honoured to be recognised in such a way. My family are very proud. My mum is already fretting about what to wear!"
Corden – who is taking over as the host of CBS talk show ‘The Late Late Show’ from Craig Ferguson next year – also took to Twitter to thank his fans for their congratulatory messages.
He posted: "Thank you all for your incredibly kind messages. It feels a bit bizarre but your warmth and joy is lovely x (sic)"
Corden’s ex-girlfriend, actress Sheridan Smith, has also been nominated for an OBE and admits it has been a "surreal" experience.
She tweeted: "Finally … I can thanku for your lovely messages! All extremely surreal I know but thank u to those of u for your kind support. Huge love! (sic)"
Other recipients of honours include ‘Appropriate Adult’ star Emily Watson, who will receive an OBE, while veteran actor John Hurt will be knighted.
Kristin Scott Thomas, Joan Collins, presenter and charity campaigner Esther Rantzen and fashion designer Mary Quant will all receive damehoods.
In the world of sport, Dame Mary Peters was made a Companion of Honour for services to sport and the community in Northern Ireland, 3,000-metre Olympian Wendy Sly – who took silver at the 1984 Olympics – was awarded an MBE and Steve Cram is honoured with a CBE for his work for the English Institute of Sport.
Elsewhere, Viagra creator Simon Campbell is recognised with a knighthood, lawyer Fiona Woolf is being made a dame and business moguls James Caan – best known for being a former investor on ‘Dragons’ Den’ – and Brent Hoberman receive OBEs.
