‘It was bloody terrifying’: Daisy Edgar-Jones on landing Normal People lead

Daisy Edgar-Jones found it "blood terrifying" landing the lead role in ‘Normal People’.

The 22-year-old actress has admitted she suffered from impostor syndrome when she found out she got the part of Marianne alongside Paul Mescal’s Connell in the BAFTA-winning series and questioned whether they "got it wrong" by casting her.

However, once she settled in, Daisy grew in confidence.

Speaking in an interview for the September issue of Harper’s Bazaar UK magazine, she explained: "It was bloody terrifying. When I got the part, I was very excited. Then I had the fear settle in, the imposter syndrome of thinking, have they actually got it wrong? I learnt a lot during filming about being more confident in my voice and not feeling like I have to quieten it."

Daisy also revealed that she believes her bangs, which have their own Instagram account, are her lucky charm as she thinks they helped her secure her role in ‘War of the Worlds’ and make her "act better".

She said: "It’s so funny. I got the fringe as a sort of break-up haircut after I came really close to a job and didn’t get it. The next week I had another audition for [the television series] ‘War of the Worlds’ and got the part. I can act better with a fringe, it’s my secret power!"

Meanwhile, Daisy insisted that the key to being able to perform intense sex scenes with Paul was their close bond and having the same "sense of humour".

And she insisted that they were never "sexualised" in the love-making scenes.

She said: "It was about creating a real friendship with Paul so we could trust each other. I’m lucky he and I understand each other and have a very similar sense of humour. Neither Paul nor I are ever sexualised in those moments. It’s just a story of young love."

The September issue of Harper’s Bazaar is on sale from 13 August 2020 or by visiting harpersbazaar.com/daisyedgarjones.
